Did Republicans deliberately crash the US economy? | Michael Cohen | Comment is free | guardian.co.uk

Beyond McConnell's words, though, there is circumstantial evidence to make the case. Republicans have opposed a lion's share of stimulus measures that once they supported, such as a payroll tax break, which they grudgingly embraced earlier this year. Even unemployment insurance, a relatively uncontroversial tool for helping those in an economic downturn, has been consistently held up by Republicans or used as a bargaining chip for more tax cuts. Ten years ago, prominent conservatives were loudly making the case for fiscal stimulus to get the economy going; today, they treat such ideas like they're the plague.

Traditionally, during economic recessions, Republicans have been supportive of loose monetary policy. Not this time. Rather, Republicans have upbraided Ben Bernanke, head of the Federal Reserve, for even considering policies that focus on growing the economy and creating jobs.

And then, there is the fact that since the original stimulus bill passed in February of 2009, Republicans have made practically no effort to draft comprehensive job creation legislation. Instead, they continue to pursue austerity policies, which reams of historical data suggest harms economic recovery and does little to create jobs. In fact, since taking control of the House of Representatives in 2011, Republicans have proposed hardly a single major jobs bill that didn't revolve, in some way, around their one-stop solution for all the nation's economic problems: more tax cuts.

There is our pathological liar again.

they have turned on bills they wrote and sponsered themsleves once Obama supported their ideas.

They have proven they dont care about this country and instead believe in Grover Norquist

And for purely partisan reasons. In their irrational hatred of Obama, they’re willing to allow millions of Americans to continue to suffer for some perceived political gain.

How much "looser" do you want the monetary policy to be, Clayton?

How is calling for a little fiscal "sanity" translate to being willing to let millions of Americans continue to suffer?

The truth is...this Administration has been quite content to let most folks in the private sector twist in the wind while they protected their pals in unions and government. When Barry said that the private sector was "fine" and that the public sector was the one that he wanted to help (AGAIN!) that was no slip of the tongue...that's what he BELIEVES. If you're not one of Barry's core of supporters then don't hold your breath waiting for help to arrive from this President because quite frankly...he couldn't care LESS about you. Barry views the private sector as nothing more than an ATM from which he can steal money for his progressive agenda because that's what his background has led him to believe is the way things SHOULD be.

Most political junkies are aware of the concept of the "October surprise". The phenomenon is usually a democrat party dirty trick timed and designed to influence the presidential election. Consider the timeline of the collapse of Fannie Mae. The House Banking Committee is charged with oversight responsibility for Fannie and Democrat Barney Frank was chairperson of the committee when Fannie collapsed. George Bush was in his 2nd term and democrats held the majority in both houses of congress. The economy was a big issue and if it collapsed in time for the election Bush would be blamed. Frank never explained why he told America that Fannie was doing fine and nobody in the liberal media ever asked him any meaningful questions but Fannie collapsed bringing down the banking and lending industries under Barney Frank's watch. Democrats got their wish in November when Americans elected a neo-socialist.

Obama was a US Senator & had the ability to draft legislation, not just write a letter.

In the summer of 2005, a bill emerged from the Senate Banking Committee that considerably tightened regulations on Fannie and Freddie, including controls over their capital and their ability to hold portfolios of mortgages or mortgage-backed securities. All the Republicans voted for the bill in committee; all the Democrats voted against it. To get the bill to a vote in the Senate, a few Democratic votes were necessary to limit debate. This was a time for the leadership Sen. Obama says he can offer, but neither he nor any other Democrat stepped forward.

Instead, by his own account, Mr. Obama wrote a letter to the Treasury Secretary, allegedly putting himself on record that subprime loans were dangerous and had to be dealt with. This is revealing; if true, it indicates Sen. Obama knew there was a problem with subprime lending -- but was unwilling to confront his own party by pressing for legislation to control it. As a demonstration of character and leadership capacity, it bears a strong resemblance to something else in Sen. Obama's past: voting present.

Republicans didn't need to deliberately crash the economy. Democrats did it for them. The reasons the democrats crashed the economy to democrats were noble reasons. It was so they could build the worker's paradise from the ashes.

That's the part that didn't work out.

Ugh...TM post another dumbass thread and pages of comments are the result.
Really good threads in this section (economics) on important topics with out the stupid left/right rock throwing - and they are all but ignored.

They have proven they dont care about this country and instead believe in Grover Norquist

and of course Norquist is all about limited government exactly as our Founders were. Why not move to Cuba if you don't like the basic concept of America.

Republicans have made practically no effort to draft comprehensive job creation legislation.

OMG!!!! Too stupid!!! Republicans believe in capitalism not legislation to create make-work jobs. Explaining things to a liberal is exactly like talking to a child who has flunked 1st grade 3 times.

as a liberal you lack the IQ to understand capitalism so like a child you believe in magical legislation

So, Ed, you are now in the minority. Two recent polls have shown that the american populace now believe that repubs have consorted to crash the Obama economy. You will never believe it, but the evidence is very obvious to rational folks. According to the polls, Dems and independents, and the population overall believe it to be true. Only repubs disagree.

A new book out, by two authors - called Its Even Worse Than It Looks, documents the efforts of repubs to crash the economy. Authors are Thomas Mann and Norman Ornstein, both well respected and impartial political analysts. Both have been at their trade for over 40 years. Mann is a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution, and Ornstein, a resident scholar at the American Enterprise Institute.

So, here is the issue. People overwhelmingly see the efforts of repubs as anti american, and most as treasonous. This whole issue is likely to get really interesting over the months ahead. And believe me, if you look at the charges this book makes, this is serious stuff. Maybe not illegal, but ruining the lives of american in order to defeat political opponents is not well thought of. And, according to the authors, this is overwhelmingly a REPUBLICAN problem, not a Democratic one.

Repeating a lie over and over does not make that lie true when you tell it the next time, it's still a lie.

I don't know if they deliberately crashed it but they have done everything possible to delay the recovery. I guess they thought voters wouldn't notice.

oh, sorry, I meant Democrats fought every effort
Freudian slip?

Any proof, or just more blather?

Actually, there is plenty of proof that the GOP at least tried to rein in Fannie and Freddie... unfortunately, the Dems didn't want to... according to Franks 'there was no problem' with Fannie and Freddie... of course, he was fucking an exec at Fanny Mae at the time.
In 2008, Bush backed and signed into a law a bill that pumped 300 billion into Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac which only made the crash worse.

obama to the coal industry
So, if somebody wants to build a coal plant, they can — it’s just that it will bankrupt them, because they are going to be charged a huge sum for all that greenhouse gas that’s being emitted.
