Thoughts from an Independent:

For 200+ years Conservatives and Liberals worked together in government to craft legislation and pass laws. They didn't always agree, they didn't always get along, but they knew they had to either work with the other side, or nothing would get done, it's called compromise. In the last 20-30 years however, tribalism has become so popular, it threatens to reduce the power of Americas governing bodies (and in turn America) to a weakened shadow of its former self. So...will American voters insist their lawmakers behave as such, and work together to do their jobs, or is a deeply divided America the new normal?

Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city or house divided against itself will not stand.

Yup, we can thank Obama...he built this.

I’m confident democrats will eventually set their lust for power aside and start respecting the will of voters.

Considering the direction they're going, not sure if any of us will be alive when that happens.

I don't know if it's the new normal, but we're just lost right now. The question is whether we can find our way back.

Who knows how that happens, or if. The actions that would be required to improve things just seem beyond us.

The walkaway movement is attempting to bridge the divide and Democrats called them “Russian bots”, the division is ALL on the Democrats.

We do best when there is balance of power, any one person or group gets to much power they become corrupt, not sure why, yet it always ends up that way.

Yup and The novice Obama blew it out of the water, the word "compromise" was not in his vocabulary.

Being that 150 million, give or take don't vote, participate or even pay attention to politics.
Are we really that divided?

Half the country is apathetic and simply checked out.

A simple off button shuts off all the noise and in my day to day life I really don't see this division. Just most people going about their day and quite civil with each other.

Maybe this forum is not a great cross-section but based on the responses so far, it does not seem like compromise is on the horizon. Kind of wishing a coalition of centerists would start to caucus together with the sole purpose of creating and maintaining effective government. But how do get this elected on that platform? I can see the bumper stickers now: Moderation is Fun! OR Not too far left, not too far right...but right down the middle! OR Fighting is Fun but Safety is Better OR Do want a boring pilot or an exciting one on your next flight? OR Have you moderated someone you love today?
Worried not scared, let’s hope calm reason is the next big thing.

I’m confident democrats will eventually set their lust for power aside and start respecting the will of voters.
Once they are completely destroyed in 2020, maybe.
They’ve been taking a beating since obama was elected. :)
Yeah, but once their “blue wave” is destroyed in a few days and Trump is easily re-elected, they will have nothing left. A few party leaders will become open terrorists and they will never win another national election again. This is the last gasp of the Democrats and their media referees as a domestic terrorist group.

Remember, this election is supposed to be when either Trump supporters “punish” Trump at the ballot box for not being who they supposedly wanted and/or the year that Democrats successfully dupe white people into voting for them again to establish a permanent majority, on top of the fact that the party in power is supposed to lose seats because of complacency. If none of those things happen then Democrats will place all their hopes and dreams into using Hillary’s “popular vote” majority to beat Trump, and an easy victory for Trump at that point(especially a “popular vote” majority) would absolutely crush the remaining spirit of the Democrats beyond repair.

The Republicans might not even have to campaign in most places in 2022 after all the carnage.

I’m just going to continue loving life while wishing the best for everyone. :)

We live in a great country that has checks and balances. A country that has kicked democrats to the curb because of their craziness.

I’ll keep voting while hoping the right person wins.

The $21T they have run up has many Citizens on edge. Earned SS, 401K, IRA, home value in jeporady. No signs of getting control of that? As DemRINO do the 3 day dance.

Even millenials see it exploding. Many blame baby boomers for "sucking up SS" and letting bad GOVT happen. They are told in school, "leftist are good, RW is the cause of debt". They are now old enough to see BS. They see 2 years time given to surrender GOVT email and I hear them say WTH over?

I see Range Rover dealerships increasing around DC. Golden pensions, no meangingful work in DC. 10% wasted right off the top, before the wasteful GOVT even gets involved and starts inneffective programs. Yes, it could be and should be better. Trump was the best hope to date. Giddyup.

Dude, you should have been around in the 1960's and 1970's if you want to see a real divided America, with real bombs exploding, assassinations, protests and beatings on live TV..Ahhh, those were the good ol' days....

Only until the next civil war.

Find our way back to... when most of America was American?

Hmm... "finding" may not be the term to use here.
