Calling the fair tax a "consumption" tax is completely misleading. In that way, all taxes are consumption taxes. You only pay income taxes if you have a job, which you only have if someone buys something. In the end, all taxes except the death tax are built into the price of products we buy.

The most efficient tax is to tax something evenly and directly. All taxes, again other than the death tax, are taxes on economic activity. Now we have countless systems for collecting taxes and armies of accountants and lawyers to avoid paying them and an underground economy that doesn't pay them. The Fair Tax is just that, an even tax directly on economic activity that replaces all the other indirect taxes on economic activity.

You can keep your system where the IRS has gestapo powers and tax payers have no privacy, no assuptiion of innocence, the IRS gets no warrants and has to show no probable cause. Government puts businesses and individuals under the microscope, makes us report every dime we earn and invest. Seriously, a "libertarian" wants that over a system that removes all that? This is some use of the term "libertarian" I am not familiar with .
