There's a reason they're deploying to the East. The large convoy North of Kyiv was a tactical blunder. It got bogged down and they were being picked off. They withdrew from that area because they felt that even if could take the city, the house to house fighting would be brutal for the Russians.

The Reds already hold the Donbas area in East Ukraine. They will have an easier time resupplying themselves, since they also control Crimea and much of the Black Sea.
