I read in this article that in the wake of the failures of the Children's Crusade, people came to decide that the whole enterprise was the work of the devil.

They've killed, no doubt about that. Medieval and ancient history is filled with people slaughtering each other for a variety of reasons, land, religion, salt, spices, resources, slaves, etc. .
