Expelled Oklahoma U fraternity to sue university, possibly President Boren

I guess age does not guarantee wisdom

The audacity of duh...this woman is an idiot.

She is 78 year old and she is the house mom. I was under impression that house moms were supposed to provide moderating effect on otherwise wild fraternity boys.

She was having a party with them. I read that she would drink with those under age boys. Doesn't sound to me like she was too worried about having a place to live.

Never a dull moment here in Oklahoma. :D

I did not know you were from Oklahoma. That is indeed an exciting place. I have worked there for a short period of time. I have done some moderate partying myself when I was there :)

Where in Oklahoma?

I have a love/hate relationship with my home state right now. It was a great place to grow up, and the people are friendly, they're just not very bright when it comes to politics. :p

I worked in Oklahoma City. After I finished my project, I was given an offer to work in Tulsa but I declined and came back. I did notice that there was heavy duty polarization between whites and blacks in Oklahoma. As far as I am concerned, I managed to make the best of my stay there despite undergoing a spell of depression.

Hey, at least you weren't stuck in Mississippi. LOL!!!

Republicans would like you to believe that racism does not exist anymore. :p

Yes. Inside the privacy of their frat gatherings they're creating a hostile environment.

Once it hits youtube, it's no longer private.
You mean leaked?

It doesn't fucking matter.

I say we tattoo SAE on their foreheads, then send them on a cross country magical mystery singing bus tour so they can sing their song for everyone.

They can sing at halftime for all the college football games. Do you think the little pussies can handle that?
Yeah, actually it does matter, especially if you're accusing them of creating a hostile environment. It's not reasonable to hold people accountable for what they do in private and don't intend to become public.

They were singing while others held up their cell phones to film them. How private is that, ding-dong?
When it was leaked to the public, horse's ass.

You're talking to somebody who's part of the problem. Leftists foment racial strife and division.

A far cry from intentionally creating a hostile environment.

I do not think I have ever been to Mississippi. I do recall watching that movie called Mississippi Burning. BTW, I love drinking Mississippi Mud once in a while. It is delicious.

We are a very long way from fixing racism. It is particularly alive and kicking among white elites and that is where it garners its maximum potency from.

That was a good movie. Gene Hackman did a hellava job!

I don't recall seeing the word "intentional" in the OU handbook of code and conduct.

Of course they are not the same. But they are things that many people find to be immoral.

Who decides what things are immoral enough for a student to be expelled and what things are okay, the university president? Is the level of publicity the standard?

I think that's one consideration. The heinousness of the offense is another.

OMG they were literally singing about killing people. I remember that time someone told me to literally kill myself and I got that huge settlement because of his mean words.

 at how some unspecified code of conduct overrides the 1A and established case law on free speech for college students.

The same way some 'code of conduct' says that if I call my coworker a nasty c-word, I can be fired, forget about the "First Amendment". This isn't a first Amendment issue.

Not only is your position stupid on a legal basis. It would still be a dumb one to hold without the 1A. Expelling someone for an edgy joke in private is crazy. Speech codes like this are when annoying political correctness slips over into repressive tyranny.

These kids did absolutely nothing immoral. They were joking in private among friends. The immoral actors here are the state punishing them for wrong think.

I think singing about lynching people who want to join your frat is pretty offensive and so do most people.

They signed an agreement with the University and they violated it. Time to learn from your mistake and move on with your life.

More telling

Did any of them protest that what they were doing was wrong?
If no one complained about a hostel environment, then the case of expelling the students for creating a hostel environment is weak!

Would you approve of Belle Knox being expelled from Duke for making porn?
Seems the entire nation is complaining about a hostile educational environment
Your rights end where my feelings begin.

In this case, it was the feelings of an entire university

Sucks being a racist these days doesn't it?
Guess racists don't have 1st ammendment rights. Don't you see the problem here. The first ammendment doesn't only protect speech that we like or agree with, it protects speech that we hate or disagree with.
You have no understanding of the first amendment

It never says there can be no consequences for what you say

Expulsion is one of those consequences

I don't see an exception for speech being called "conduct" in the 1st Amendment.

Oh, I think you need to do further reading on this subject.

King was not a partisan and never endorsed any political candidate. In a 1958 interview, King said “I don’t think the Republican party is a party full of the almighty God nor is the Democratic party. They both have weaknesses … And I’m not inextricably bound to either party.”

http://mlk-kpp01.stanford.edu/primarydocuments/Vol4/11-Feb-1958_InterviewAtBennett.pdf

King did, however, weigh in on the Republican party during his lifetime. In Chapter 23 of his autobiography, King writes this about the 1964 Republican National Convention:

The Republican Party geared its appeal and program to racism, reaction, and extremism. All people of goodwill viewed with alarm and concern the frenzied wedding at the Cow Palace of the KKK with the radical right. The “best man” at this ceremony was a senator whose voting record, philosophy, and program were anathema to all the hard-won achievements of the past decade.

Here is what King had to say about Ronald Reagan, the hero of modern Republicans:

When a Hollywood performer, lacking distinction even as an actor can become a leading war hawk candidate for the Presidency, only the irrationalities induced by a war psychosis can explain such a melancholy turn of events.

It was a nice try. LOL!

People have been fired from jobs and expelled from school for things they've posted on Facebook. sorry, the racist fratboys don't have a leg to stand on here.

The things they posted on facebook were threats against other students. If I am paying to go to a university you better damn well believe that I have a right to be there. And short of being a threat to other students or causing a disruption which disrupts other students learning at that university, (and of course for academic dishonesty) they can't throw me out.

For those who are comparing it to employment.....the money is flowing in the other direction so the rules are VASTLY different.

As someone on here stated, free speech applies to everyone. And no university can hold a student accountable for their behavior off campus. And I believe this racist chant happened in an airplane or something?

Racists found the limits of free speech

Used to be they could pull that shit anywhere
