Former Trump advisor Peter Navarro was indicted by a federal grand jury Friday for contempt of Congress for failing to comply with a subpoena from the Jan. 6 committee and says he was put in handcuffs and leg irons as he was arrested ahead of his first court date.

Navarro has been charged with two counts of contempt, one for failing to appear for a deposition before the committee and one for failing to produce documents. The former Trump trade adviser was approached by an FBI agent arrested while trying to board a flight to Nashville for a TV hit ahead of his court appearance in Washington, D.C. Friday afternoon for the charges.

Navarro told the court the FBI agent approached him and told him he could not contact anyone as he arrested Navarro.

When a person gets indicted, it often follows that he gets arrested. That isn’t the important part. The indictment is. And the principles involved are very interesting.

The facts aren’t going to be much in dispute. We know he got a subpoena to come to a deposition and one to produce documents. He demurred. Therefore it got referred to the rather partisan present DOJ. Not unexpectedly, they chose to proceed.

The question to be decided (factually) by a jury will probably be whether he was asserting a valid claim of privilege. But that’s also a legal question. So, even if there is a conviction, it may not stand. It shouldn’t.

The Guardian reports, "Peter Navarro, a top former White House adviser to Donald Trump, was taken into custody after being indicted by a federal grand jury on Friday on two counts of contempt of Congress for defying a subpoena issued by the House select committee investigating the January 6 Capitol attack.

"The indictment against Navarro marks the first time that the justice department has pursued charges against a Trump White House official who worked in the administration on January 6 and participated in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results.

"Navarro is facing one count of contempt of Congress for his refusal to appear at a deposition and a second count for his refusal to turn over documents as demanded by the select committee’s subpoena, the justice department announced in a news release.

A number of Trump's close associates have been indicted or will be indicted, and some have gone to prison.

Yet nothing ever happens to the mastermind behind the coup attempt on Jan. 6, 2021. Donald Trump has never been charged with a crime. Why is that?
