Florida to teach "Shakespeare excerpts" to avoid crazy state laws

The law that bans Shakespeare is protecting kids from democrats.

Without such laws, democrats dress up like freaks, go to schools and read kids pornographic books.

You oppose the laws not because you like Shakespeare, you oppose the laws because you want to sexualize children with books like Lawn Boy.
Protecting seniors from Romeo and Juliet. Got it.

You want ALL the books put back or just Shakespeare?
No, if a book is pornographic then of course it shouldn’t be in schools.

the works of Shakespeare (the topic of this thread) are clearly not porn.

You act as if the distinction is hard to make. It isn’t.

Pupils in a Florida school district will only be reading excerpts of Shakespeare rather than the full plays after new guidelines regarding sexual content in the curriculum were brought in.

Teachers in Hillsborough County have been told parts of the Bard's classics contain sections which are sexual in nature and therefore cannot be taught following the passing of the Parental Rights in Education Act.

I suppose that you could condense any work of art to its bare bones. The Reduced Shakespeare Company did it for years in the UK. But they did it for comic effect and a knowledge of the plays was needed to get the most out of it.

Florida is screwing up its kids at the behest of extreme right wing crazies. Why bother teaching anything at all ?

Michelangelo.
Milton
and now Shakespeare are deemed too much for kids accoerding to moronic Florida republicans.

There isnt much else left to ban. Maybe the kids will end up watching monster trucks and wrestling ?
Our failing education system can use the extra time to teach some American History....

The thread is about the Florida law. Democrats oppose it (for obvious reasons)

Do you want the law repealed?

They want to ban that old white supremacist completely.

Shakespeare got caught up in the anti grooming law they want appealed.
You act like it was beyond anyone’s control.

Only a fucking moron would interpret that law to mean Shakespeare should be cut.

Someone made that conscious decision because they’re a moron.

Sure. I agree. Laws like the Florida one can go to far.

Except that no one cut Shakespeare.

Cutting Shakespeare on the basis that it’s “too dirty” for kids is moronic.

Cut it because elementary kids are too young to decipher the old English, fine.

Cut it because you thing it’s racy, you’re a moron.

Read the fucking article. You won't sound like such a fool.

Why? Because they “only” cut parts out and left little samples of the plays?

Cutting out the “dirty parts” is moronic because there are no dirty parts in Shakespeare.

Because while students have the full text, only excerpts are read aloud.
Because in high school, Shakespeare is taught without any restrictions.

Shakespeare is THE major player in the cannon of English language literature.

Censoring out parts, even if just for being read aloud, is moronic and makes us look stupid in the eyes of the world and in the eyes of history.

I doubt very much schools in Spain are censoring Don Quixote or schools in France censoring Voltaire.

Yeah, I’ll admit Shakespeare is too difficult for elementary aged kids

But why deny them access to it?
They’re being denied access?

Link please.

They’re simply not being read more than excerpts; I’m sure they can check Hamlet out of the liberry & such if so inclined. (If the full text isn't being supplied them already that is.)
