What's wrong with making America a utopia?

It's better than the Republicans cheering the execution of prisoners or cheering the letting of sick people die because they don't have health insurance.

I have a hard time imagining a Democratic crowd cheering those two things.

Health Care Waivers Nixed
For Indiana, Louisiana​

"The Department of Health and Human Services has denied Indiana’s and Louisiana’s requests for temporary relief from health reform’s medical loss ratio requirements, making them the third and fourth states to have their applications rejected outright.

The states join North Dakota and Delaware as those rebuffed in waiver requests. The four states wanted to more slowly phase in the health law’s requirement that insurers in the individual market spend at least 80 percent of consumers’ premium dollars on medical care. Under the 2010 health law, insurers found to fall short of that requirement must give consumers a rebate.

The HHS denial letter notes that only one insurer in Indiana’s individual market would no longer be profitable after issuing a MLR rebate if the standard were in effect today — and that insurer is already changing its business practices to adapt to the new environment.

“It appears to us all [the insurers] would remain in the market with an 80 percent standard,” Gary Cohen, acting director of oversight at the Center for Consumer Information and Insurance Oversight, said on a conference call with reporters Monday."

"I have long argued that the impact of the Affordable Care Act is not nearly as big of a deal as opponents would have you believe. At the end of the day, the law is – in the main – little more than a successful effort to put an end to some of the more egregious health insurer abuses while creating an environment that should bring more Americans into programs that will give them at least some of the health care coverage they need.

There is, however, one notable exception – and it’s one that should have a long lasting and powerful impact on the future of health care in our country.

That would be the provision of the law, called the medical loss ratio, that requires health insurance companies to spend 80% of the consumers’ premium dollars they collect—85% for large group insurers—on actual medical care rather than overhead, marketing expenses and profit. Failure on the part of insurers to meet this requirement will result in the insurers having to send their customers a rebate check representing the amount in which they underspend on actual medical care.

This is the true ‘bomb’ contained in Obamacare and the one item that will have more impact on the future of how medical care is paid for in this country than anything we’ve seen in quite some time. Indeed, it is this aspect of the law that represents the true ‘death panel’ found in Obamacare—but not one that is going to lead to the death of American consumers. Rather, the medical loss ratio will, ultimately, lead to the death of large parts of the private, for-profit health insurance industry.

For Republicans America is a platform for individual fulfillment. Here is the catch: the Individual is defined in the narrowest possible terms. Any notion of the "The Public Good" is seen as "Socialism" (socialism being anything the government does for the non-wealthy). The Free Market will fix New Orleans levees. The Free Market will effectively control the amount of derivative based risk Wall Street will take. The Free Market will get us off imported oil(rather than spending decades making terrorists stronger). The Free Market will keep our rivers clean. The Free Market will make healthcare more efficient. The Free Market won't bribe Washington in order to increase it's profit margin. We don't need to worry about "The Public Good", individual selfishness driven by short term profit is a utopian reflex.

But the world doesn't work that way. Selfishness harms society....tears it apart....destroys the world economy....spills millions of barrels of oil in the Gulf of Mexico.....tears a hole in the ozone...creates a garbage patch in the Pacific Ocean twice the size of Texas...melts the North Polar ice cap.....creates massive deficits by giving huge tax breaks for the wealthy....

But the Republicans celebrate this selfishness. It is their core value. For them greed is good.
