Even if that were true, how does it justify giving government a blank check to take whatever it wants? why should a business be on the hook for anything more than the cost of services government provides?

Garbage in my neighborhood is picked up by a private company - Waste Management Services. The power utility is also a private company. Internet is also supplied by a private company - Comcast. Many localities also have private water and sewer companies. Many companies also have private security - especially large corporations.

So what are these essential services that businesses can't live without?

Let's say, for the sake of argument, that businesses can't exist without some essential government "service" like police protection. Why does that justify government raping them for everything it can get out of them? Businesses also can't exist without office supplies. Does that mean Office Depot is entitled to hold them up for ransom, to take everything the earn above the minimum needed for survival?

Any rational person would call that criminal behavior, and that's exactly what it is. that's exactly what the liberals are doing when they demand that the rich "pay their fair share." They are nothing more than common thugs extorting money from the rich. Actually the street thug is more honorable than Obama or his drones because he doesn't insist that it's your patriotic duty to hand over your cash to him. He doesn't claim you owe it to him. He doesn't claim it's your "fair share." A street thug knows he's nothing more than a thug. Even the French are getting a taste of the failed policies of Socialism, to include their courts which will not allow the insane Socialists of that country to rob the wealthy blind. The really telling thing is that although a multitude of business has fled France over the tax inequality, soaking the rich-- these same blind politicians don't care.. Jobs don't matter, only stealing money from the rich to fund their pet projects. Just as here in the United States, you could tax the rich 100% of their income and it would only help to fund the government for 3 months and NOT MAKE ONE single dent in the debt.

Slavery would have ended quickly without bloodshed if the Confederate states had been allowed to go their own way. That's what happened in every other country on the globe. Brazil was the last country to abolish slaver in 1886. If the slave states were no longer part of the United States, then the Northern states would no longer have been obligated to enforce the Fugitive Slave act, and slavery would have thereby ended very quickly.

Furthermore, we probably wouldn't have entered WW I, which means WW II would never have happened. Germany and England would have come to a negotiated settlement rather than having the atrocious Versailles treaty enforced on the Germans, which lead directly to WW II.

Instead we had 800,000 dead and an entire region of the United States was economically and socially devastated for a century.

Yeah, the Civil War sure was a good deal for everyone!
