Free College Education

Frankly, in this day and age, virtual universities make more sense than physical universities do. Televised classes could impart ivy league education to millions without tuition worries. And anyone wanting to be tested for degree purposes could simply report to a testing station on a specific date.

My youngest daughter just graduated from college with a degree in biology and received her commission as a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. Her college education was not free. The taxpayers paid for her education because she endured a great deal in order to receive that Army commission. While other students were partying the night away, she was tucked in bed in order to get up for physical fitness training at 5:45 am, Monday through Friday. While other students were enjoying their summer breaks, she was on a Caribbean island helping high school students prepare for their role in their country's police force by teaching them skills and discipline they would need. She spent another summer slogging through the mud and living in 100 degree heat in tents for weeks at a time.

That is how she earned her education. Even after that, she has a seven-year service obligation to pay back what she received.

It wasn't free by any stretch of the imagination and no one gets a free education. Somebody pays.

That's lovely and wholly irrelevant.

What if an American kid is born poor?

So if we keep enough Americans uneducated because they can't afford it,

how will that make America a better place?

Because they will have to pay for their education themselves. They will learn the value of a dollar, learn responsibility, and learn that there is no free ride unless you vote for X.

And if they learn these things, they will become conservative and that would help the country greatly.

You mean like home schooling? Not a bad idea.

The idea of free education is a plausible way to capture the imagination of potential College students. But maybe that should be limited to "subjects" that could benefit the Country in terms of economic growth. The disciplines of Engineering and the Sciences (and all sub divisions of these subjects) would warrant full support of the Government and US companies. Of course failure to complete the degree course successfully would require the student to pay back all their past tuition fees; nothing is that free !!!

Nothing is for free. Benefit the country? I don't know how you come up with that one. We already have engineers and scientists--that paid for their own college educations. If they pay for it themselves they're certain to graduate and work hard at making that happen.

When something is given for free, people tend to take it for granted, and abuse it. BTW--this is why we have scholarships, so the top of the top can get go to college for "free."

I don't know what you people don't understand about being 19 trillion dollars in red ink? Here is what 1 trillion dollars looks like. These are $100.00 bills stacked together on pallets.

Why should we start an education with a lie, make prospective college students understand the higher dreams and aspirations cost time, effort and yes, money. You want to see the costs of an education go up faster than it is now, make it free.

you have to ask "why does a country offer further education" Because it is in the interest of that Countries economic growth. Unfortunately Colleges offer courses that have no bearing on that premise (to gain profit in most cases) and consequently the cost of education will increase. Also to follow highly disciplined courses like Engineering and the Sciences requires stringent school curriculums which are sadly lacking these days (and unlikely to change in the future). Until that is resolved then the US will have to "import" their technology and people from other Countries, at the cost of home grown talent.

In this day and age college and group "education" is a waste of time for someone interesting in learning facts. The school systems from top to bottom are loaded with agenda driven "teachers" who are not particularly good with subject matter, but practiced in brainwashing students. There should be a series of tests that anyone can take to meet the requirements of a certain "degree." The co-ed socializing is really the only reason from attending a college, and it is indeed a tremendous amount of fun. But the academics are pretty much a waste of time and money. So making it "free" is simply full taxpayer subsidizing the peculiar groups that seem to control academia. That would be equivalent to being taxed by Hollywood even though you don't even waste time watching their movies.

What you said there. What does that have to do with getting a degree in engineering?

If you were trying to sound like an ignorant buffoon, you really nailed it with that post.

My original premise was that a degree course related to Engineering or Sciences should be free tuition, but if they fail at any stage all fees are to be repaid (to deter the party goers). If you want to study Law, Literature, Fine Art, or any subject not related Engineering or Sciences , then you have to apply for financial support.
