The classic phrase drawn from the Wizard of Oz applies here. A cop with twenty years of experience sees things in a new light and lets us glimpse behind the curtain.

It is a long article. And it is an interesting story. I would normally not post something this old. It happened years ago. But there are some interesting and telling parts to the story.
Matt called the FBI agents he met on Monday. “You see what’s happening here,” Matt told them. “They’re working it backwards.” Matt’s experience as a cop taught him that officers can sometimes write themselves out of trouble through exaggerated and self-serving reports. “Whenever you see these officers come out with a use of force, whether it be a shooting or a tasering or a whatever, there are phrases that always go in those reports, that we’ve been trained to put in there,” Matt said. “And so many times that’s just like an ‘insert quote here’ in your report because that’s going to cover your ass.”
Matt saw the phrasing and knew Runnels was looking for ways to justify both the stop and the attempted arrest. Matt suspected that once it was clear the warrant association to the car wasn’t sufficient probable cause for an arrest, Runnels needed new justifications. Since smell is subjective, and difficult to prove, officers can use “marijuana odor” broadly to justify probable cause, Matt said. “Cops use that all the time.”
We are trained to put those phrases in the reports. Trained to obfuscate the truth. Trained to Obstruct. Trained to lie.
Matt the 19 year at the time of this article veteran SWAT cop has seen it and obviously used it in the past. Only now it was being done to his son. He got the chance to see how the victims live. He got the chance to see his loved ones suffer from the abuse.
Even that isn’t enough to destroy his faith in his fellow cops however. He feels sorry for the other cop who got four years in Federal Prison for giving his son Brain Damage. He blames Taser more than the culture he belongs to and defends. If only the cops had better training.
The story could be a thread here. With the Cop Supporters blaming everyone but the cop. Telling the Mother if she had done a better job raising her child this would not have happened.
Everything the advocates for reform have been saying is there too. But that reform is doomed. Because the Cops are trained to put the right phrases in reports to cover their illegal actions up. And other cops will back them. Because it is Us against Them to the cops. This story just shows that Them is also part of the Us.
Now. Imagine this story where a more senior cop wasn’t pushing. Justified use of force. Had no choice. All the crap we hear all the time. As the Black Cops tell Matt at the end of the story. This is what we have been telling you for years.
How many thousands have suffered the same situation if not the same fate as Bryce?
