GOP leaders to skip Selma event

Party doesn't matter. Conservatives didn't want the Voting Rights Act.

They believed it violated states rights. Do you?

Ah yes a moment of stunned silence from the usually loquacious Redfish.

He can't admit he's a statesrightser, just like those conservative racist Democrats were back in those days.

unlike you, I do not spend my entire life on this message board.

the civil rights act of 1965 would not have passed without GOP support.

But since you brought it up, which party tried to fillibuster that act?
Why aren't Republicans embracing their civil rights roots?

Are they ashamed to admit it?

not at all, true civil rights are about equality, not special treatment.

We understand that you dems have to play the race card in every political issue, but its not a valid card and the american people, of all races, are seeing that as the fraud that it is.
Selma was about voting rights and equal treatment under the law

Why wouldn't Republicans endorse that?

They do. Are you a complete partisan fool?

here's an analogy for you. defeating ISIS is good for the entire world, why didn't obama endorse that by going to the Paris rally?

So now it's special treatment to give everyone the same voting rights?

Goddam!

of course not, but affirmative action is special treatment.

Afirmative action was necessary to correct a system designed to reserve killed and management jobs for white males

It was hugely successful

of course not, but affirmative action is special treatment.

Affirmative action is a remedial treatment for the past ill effects of racism. It's not a great idea, and it's divisive,

but no one has ever proposed a better remedy.

call it what you like, it gives special treatment to one group of people and is therefore unconstitutional.

Wrong. But very liberal of you. Ideas that differ from your own simply can't exist. Many have opposed and even done away with racial preferences. That's the only way to eliminate racism. Liberals are too dumb to understand that you can't defeat racism with racism.

you do not remedy past sins by committing current sins. The only constitutional remedy is equal treatment for all, not remedial treatment that punishes one group for something they did not do, while rewarding another group for unequal treatment that they did not suffer.

Racism gave white Americans special treatment for several centuries. Affirmative action is intended to fix that at least to some degree.

When you've set a race of people back in your country for hundreds of years, when you moved their starting blocks back behind the rest of Americans,

following that up with only equal opportunity simply guarantees that they will stay behind.

There are no white slave owners alive today, there are no black slaves alive today. You cannot "fix" history. We should learn from it, not try to "fix' it.

you don't fix racism by engaging in racism.

How was Obama impacted by our history. Are you claiming that he would not be president but for affirmative action? I think he might disagree.

Not true. But lol at libs that can't even see the race president of the United States for their blinders.

...Selma was about voting rights and equal treatment under the law Why wouldn't Republicans endorse that?
Did some Republican or another declare in opposition to equal voting rights and equal treatment based upon race?

Actually, they did

As soon as the Supreme Court eased restrictions on voting rights, Republicans across the land jumped at the chance to restrict voting

its downright sickening but then the Repubs have no shame.

Are you referring to the latest round of gerrymandering in a handful of States, which you Liberals blame as the underlying cause for Democratic loss of both House and Senate in the past two mid-terms? If that's the case, then, does not the Democratic Party also engage in gerrymandering, on a regular basis? What is the difference? I can point you to a Congressional district or two within the State of Illinois, that has recently experienced gerrymandering which resulted in incumbent Republicans losing their seats.

Shit happens.

Attending these events is the political version of wearing those stupid wrist bands to raise "awareness"

I'd rather see people actually doing something than standing around and mouthing meaningless platitudes
