GOP Leadership Memo Suggests Senate Cannot Block Trial If House Votes To Impeach Trump

Will Moscow Mitch try to obstruct the Senate impeachment trial? If he can - I expect he will.

Of course they could...if they did away with the filibuster, they can stall impeachment as long as the GOP finds a set of balls!

Hundreds Of Former National Security Officials Condemn Trump’s Behavior With Ukraine

The officials, many of whom served under both Republican and Democratic presidents, say Trump engaged in an “unconscionable abuse of power.”

More than 300 former U.S. national security officials signed a statement condemning President Donald Trump’s alleged efforts ― exposed by an anonymous whistleblower ― to extort Ukraine into opening a politically motivated investigation into former vice president Joe Biden.

In the statement released by the group National Security Action on Thursday night, the officials called Trump’s behavior “an unconscionable abuse of power” and commended the House of Representatives for opening an official impeachment inquiry into the matter. They wrote that if the reports are true, Trump’s misconduct represents “an effort to subordinate America’s national interests―and those of our closest allies and partners―to the President’s personal interest.”

I agree! "An unconscionable abuse of power." The evidence will only get worse for Trump.

“There is no way we could somehow bar the doors and prevent the managers from presenting the articles” of impeachment, states the memo.

The Republican leadership issued a memo Saturday clarifying that the Senate must take action if the House of Representatives approves articles of impeachment against President Donald Trump. The statement came in response to concerns that the Senate could simply refuse to hold a trial.

“There is no way we could somehow bar the doors and prevent the managers from presenting the articles to the Senate,” stated the memo, which was obtained by HuffPost. “The rules of impeachment are clear on this point.”

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) also said as much in a March interview with NPR: “If it [impeachment] were to happen, the Senate has no choice. If the House were to act, the Senate immediately goes into a trial.”

McConnell could call a vote on a motion to dismiss, which would effectively amount to a vote to acquit Trump of wrongdoing.

Sounds good - but apparently "McConnell could call a vote on a motion to dismiss, which would effectively amount to a vote to acquit Trump of wrongdoing." I don't trust any of them!
Nor would any who respect our constitution and the rule of law (so many lefties do not) have the Senate do. Once the Hysterical House Dems do what they will do the Senate must treat it with respect (undeserved) and see it to its end, whatever that may be, according to our laws.

The voters will have our opportunity to show many Dems the door (richly deserved) in 2020. :D

Not if the evidence is OVERWHELMING. Republicans must decide between party or CONSTITUTION.

If the House votes to impeach, the Senate would have to then vote on the charges, but clearly will never convict Trump.
So this not only is a huge waste of time, but takes away from the election process, which is the only reasonable way to get rid of Trump.

But there is zero evidence.
While it is possible Trump was trying to pressure the Ukrain president, it is also possible Biden's son committed a crime that Trump was right to investigate.
It is all just conjecture and opinion, with no facts for sure.

Well, that's one opinion. Speaker Pelosi has a different one - and I agree with her logic. Speaker Pelosi is putting the Constitution ahead of party. She knows it's a risk. She's a patriot.

Well, sparky, the final articles of impeachment have not been finalized and voted on. The House is trying to fight through the Republican obstruction to gather all the evidence. There is already plenty of evidence to impeach Trump. Ukraine is just the icing on the cake.

Unless there is more as yet unseen by us - much more - the case will be laughed off the Senate floor where 67 must vote to convict. "Trump is a poopyhead" is neither a high crime nor misdemeanor - required to impeach - and our Hysterical House Dem's abuse of their authority under the flimsy guise of "oversight" will not go unpunished by the voters.

Wait ... you believe her BS about putting "country before party" to have been serious? :laughing0301:

She is not that STUPID but she knows she can depend on you to be and you never disappoint.

What logic?
I have never heard or read anyone saying that they actually believed that a conviction by the Senate was remotely possible.
Firing Comey was far worse than this Ukrainian thing.
There really is nothing there at all.

There will be no vote to impeach though, so this is just some fairy tale to keep you distracted. So are ya? :71:
Entertained.

We all saw how the Senate postured and pretended to take seriously the obviously bogus allegations against Kavanaugh. They had to and will do the same with articles of impeachment ... and then laugh them off the Senate floor.

An impeachment by the House if not a conviction by the Senate.
That will never happen, and is the only way to get rid of Trump other than waiting for the 2020 elections.

Too soon to know how all the evidence will influence minds. Public perception is critical.
Public perception has Jack shit to do with proof. Just because you’re an idiot that falls for hoaxes doesn’t mean there’s a conviction.

Public perception determines how people vote.
Well you can’t fix stupid. If we could there wouldn’t be a democrat party.

Even if the Senate doesn't convict - there will be a record as to how they all voted. Depending on how strong the evidence is - this could have a chilling affect on their decisions.

there will be a record as to how they all voted.

Which could hurt Democrats as much as Republicans.

Democrats welcome that.
LOL. If they did they would have pursued this months ago.

Are you at all familiar with the meaning of the term "wishful thinking?"

Impeachment is akin to an indictment. It is not removal from office.

A senate trial is required for removal, once the evidence shows irrefutable proof of the charges.

Will Senate Republicans take their responsibility seriously? Will they hold their oaths sacred?

If they acquit, will they put politics before their constitutional responsibilities?

Moscow Mitch McConnell! Will you write your own chapter of Profiles of Courage, or will you continue to be a toady for a politically dead man walking?
