The Dixiecrats flipped over to the Republican Party in the 1960's when Kennedy and LBJ pushed through the Civil Rights Act.

In the 1970's, Reagan recognized that unless conservatives formed alliances with social conservatives and Southern conservatives, they'd never hold power again so he cobbled together a coalition of Southern racists, social conservatives and religious fundamentalists and won the election but he jettisoned promises he made to both, especially around abortion.

Reagan did end affirmative action and the War on Poverty, but otherwise failed to follow through on other promises made.
