It is July 1st, and that means that Bobby Bonilla gets paid another $1.1 million dollar installment of one of the greatest sports contracts ever signed.
Bobby hasn't played major league baseball since 2001. Bernie Madoff's "double digit returns" didn't quite work out for the Mets here...

The calendar has turned to July 1, and that means one thing: It's time for Mets fans everywhere to wish each other a Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Why? On Monday, 61-year-old Bobby Bonilla will collect a check for $1,193,248.20 from the New York Mets, as he has and will every July 1 from 2011 through 2035.

Bonilla is best known for a fight he had with a sports reporter in the locker room.

Ever heard of Chris Davis? After signing a monster deal he went into a hitting slump that he never recovered from. It was a historic slump, it got into his head, and a power hitter could not find the ball for season after season.

I was shocked to read this though.

Chris Davis: Davis' arrangement with the Orioles might make him the new Bonilla, as he collects $59 million in deferred payments during a 15-year stretch that started last year and continues through 2037. Davis will receive $9.16 million in 2024 and 2025, $3.5 million from 2026 to 2032 and $1.4 million from 2033 to 2037.

Sweet deal you would think the team negotiators would have made a performance clause in the contract. No top play no top pay.
