Somehow being missed is that the stories as written are saying that Officer Huffman was sitting in his patrol car doing paperwork, yet the video clearly shows his car in the travel lane of the highway, apparently sitting at a dead stop. It also says, if you read the article rather than depending on ShortBus' OP, that the driver had been noted to be visiting escort websites in the past while logged in as driving -- not during this incident, though he was apparently using the phone for something. Again, consider the source of the OP, for whom facts are an inconvenience to be brushed off like a housefly.

With any luck this incident will help bring about a sea change in the idea of using phones while driving, assigning it a stigma like we did with drunk driving. But fabricating irrelevant details around it just undermines the point.

I don't like the helmet idea except maybe for kids. Cell phones in cars lead to people killing OTHER people and that's where the concern should be. OTOH, helmets only involve your safety and that should be up to you.

I disagree....if you hit somebody due to your negligence and they die needlessly when a helmet could have prevented their death, you'll be charged with negligent homicide....neeedlessly. A $90 helmet with a Snell Approved sticker is a tiny price to pay compared to a severe head injury or death for both parties. I'm not talking about a full-face racing helmet (although they do save your teeth and jaw)....just a regular pot made by Bell or Bucco like we used riding motocross back in the day.
