Again, I agree you cannot separate slavery from the agricultural model any more than you can separate the flour from a cake, but the cause by definition is why it was fought. Slave ownership was a means, not an end. Southerners were not thinking they want slaves, they were thinking they wanted to preserve their economic model.

If the question were the difference between the north and the south or something like that, I'd agree it's splitting hairs. But again the "cause" is synonymous with why it was fought, and that was clearly their economic model, not the components of that model
