House Republicans still want to rip out the 14th amendment....

we haven't even seen the president's birth certificate in six years.

Perhaps we simply need a new Amendment to close the existing loophole in the 14th that Illegal Aliens use to pop-out Anchor Babies by the bushel-basketful?
This is unsurprisingly ignorant, wrong, and hateful.

No, you'd need to amend the Constitution to repeal the 14th Amendment, as citizenship at birth is not a 'loophole,' it's an acknowledgment of the fact that our rights are inalienable, and indeed manifest at birth.

That you and many bigots on the right have an unwarranted fear of more 'brown people' coming into the country is not 'justification' to throw the 14th Amendment into the trash, along with our civil liberties.

Your theory that citizenship is unalienable is obvious hooey since it's obviously alienable. If it was unalienable, then you couldn't give it up, and many Americans do that every year. Furthermore, the issue isn't citizenship at birth, but citizenship because of where you are born. I think everyone can agree that if at least one of your parents is an American citizen, then you are entitled to American citizenship. However, you aren't entitled to be an American citizen simply because your mother got on a bus and managed to get herself across the border before you were born. That idea is pure madness.

UNALIENABLE means that it can not be forcibly taken away by the government.

But Constitutional rights are waivable - they CAN be given up.

I do not understand the reason Pedro becoming a citizen is "pure madness".

Going on RIGHT NOW, in the HOR Judiciary Committee:

Hearing Birthright Citizenship Is it the Right Policy for America - Hearings - Judiciary Committee

HEARING: BIRTHRIGHT CITIZENSHIP: IS IT THE RIGHT POLICY FOR AMERICA?

Among the list of those invited is a person from the Claremont Institute, an extreme-Right-Wing think-tank.

And Rep. King just did this about 3 hours ago, at the hearing.

This HOR may just go down in history as most stupid HOR we have ever had.

Many, many important issues, and they are focused on wanting to kill the 14th amendment because of what they call "anchor babies".

Go figure.

Leftists like to boil everything down to something simplistic enough you can understand, don't you?

The Civil war was over economics. The north was becoming more industrial and with growing cities didn't need slaves. The south was agricultural and needed cheap labor. With the population of the north growing faster and their dislike of the southern slave ownership agricultural model, the south saw that inevitably they would be outvoted. So they tried to leave, which didn't work either obviously.

To say slave ownership was inseparably intertwined with the southern agricultural model is true. But to say that's the cause is not. Southerners were not thinking, "we want slaves" as their end objective, they were thinking, "we want to preserve our economic model." The cause of a war is the motivation it was fought.

Take a history class or read a book, it's fascinating.

Confederates were awesome patriots who dared defend their rights!

Whatever suits their argument at the time, I suppose :cheers2:

If you try to explain that the socially conservative southern Democratic voters that opposed civil rights are now solid members of the Republican party, the more unintelligent members, like Kosh, will jump in to call you a "leftist drone", yet never have the guts to actually make an argument against the point.

I didn't know "facts" were against the rules in Zone 2 :eusa_naughty:

I agree that it was an economic issue for the south, but that reasoning seems a bit like splitting hairs.

Just because the act of owning slaves wasn't their 'end objective', it was still the primary reason for the war. Nobody said they couldn't continue to have an agricultural model for their economy. They just had to pay their farmhands.
They fought for the right to have slaves so they didn't have to invest money into the workers they had. They wanted to have their cake and eat it, too.

If your entire way of life, economically, is based on getting free labor, and the fabric of your universe will collapse if you are forced to pay a worker for working, there is something wrong with the system.

It's madness because one Anchor Baby encourages another, and another, and another, and another... each of them tied to one or more Illegal Aliens who weasel their way into remaining upon US soil just because the puppy they popped-out was born on US soil... and we don't need that kind of loophole remaining on the books much longer.

And the bitter argument over Slavery was THE debate in the 40 years leading up to the Civil War, starting with the Missouri Compromise of 1820.

Confederate revisionists can try to re-write history, but they will fail.

No, it's not because the specific discussion is on the "cause" of the war. Again, I agree you cannot separate slavery from the agricultural model any more than you can separate the flour from a cake, but the cause by definition is why it was fought. Slave ownership was a means, not an end. Southerners were not thinking they want slaves, they were thinking they wanted to preserve their economic model.

If the question were the difference between the north and the south or something like that, I'd agree it's splitting hairs. But again the "cause" is synonymous with why it was fought, and that was clearly their economic model, not the components of that model

No one denied slavery was intertwined with the cause of the war, that is a pointless statement in that context. The conversation is above your head. Ironic in your own thread

And the biggest evidence of all that this whole thing was about slavery comes from the Vice-President of the Confederacy, one Alexander Stephens, in an extemporaneous speech now known as the Cornerstone-Speech, delivered just three weeks after Lincoln was inaugurated:

Cornerstone Speech - Wikipedia the free encyclopedia

Corner Stone Speech Teaching American History

"Our new government is founded upon exactly the opposite idea; its foundations are laid, its corner- stone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man; that slavery subordination to the superior race is his natural and normal condition. This, our new government, is the first, in the history of the world, based upon this great physical, philosophical, and moral truth. This truth has been slow in the process of its development, like all other truths in the various departments of science. It has been so even amongst us. Many who hear me, perhaps, can recollect well, that this truth was not generally admitted, even within their day. The errors of the past generation still clung to many as late as twenty years ago. Those at the North, who still cling to these errors, with a zeal above knowledge, we justly denominate fanatics. All fanaticism springs from an aberration of the mind from a defect in reasoning. It is a species of insanity. One of the most striking characteristics of insanity, in many instances, is forming correct conclusions from fancied or erroneous premises; so with the anti-slavery fanatics. Their conclusions are right if their premises were. They assume that the negro is equal, and hence conclude that he is entitled to equal privileges and rights with the white man. If their premises were correct, their conclusions would be logical and just but their premise being wrong, their whole argument fails. I recollect once of having heard a gentleman from one of the northern States, of great power and ability, announce in the House of Representatives, with imposing effect, that we of the South would be compelled, ultimately, to yield upon this subject of slavery, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics, as it was in physics or mechanics. That the principle would ultimately prevail. That we, in maintaining slavery as it exists with us, were warring against a principle, a principle founded in nature, the principle of the equality of men. The reply I made to him was, that upon his own grounds, we should, ultimately, succeed, and that he and his associates, in this crusade against our institutions, would ultimately fail. The truth announced, that it was as impossible to war successfully against a principle in politics as it was in physics and mechanics, I admitted; but told him that it was he, and those acting with him, who were warring against a principle. They were attempting to make things equal which the Creator had made unequal."

No shit. Those words came out of the mouth of the Vice-President of the Confederacy, a racist all the way down to his boots.

Like I said, butthurt racists can run, but they cannot hide. History is NOT on their side in this matter. It never will be.
