She was in the front of the mob climbing through a broken window with a backpack. How would any know she was unarmed or what she had on her? And what of the mob following behind her? People get shot for far less.

That she was unarmed is irrelevant. She was part of a violent mob which had already proven it would use any device possible as a weapon to break into the House chamber where some law makers were still holed up inside. They were literally hitting at the windows to the Speaker's Lobby even as police stood between them and the makeshift police barricade behind them. When the cops stepped aside for their own safety, they violently began smashing at the windows and doors with their hands, feet, flag pole & helmet.

Also irrelevant was Benedict Babbitt wearing a backpack as Byrd never saw the backpack when he shot her.

But it was his job to use any force necessary to stop that violent mob from breaking in until every last member of Congress and their staff were safely evacuated from the House chamber. Byrd was going to shoot anyone breaching that barricade, which was the last barricade before being able to enter the chamber. Fortunately for that violent mob, he needed to only shoot one to keep the mob out.

And the policeman / security official who shot her was armed, behind a door, and either shot recklessly, blindly through the door into the crowd or saw Babbitt and executed her, before disappearing behind the door.

Had the offficer who did the shooting been white and Babbit been George Floyd DC would still be burning and looted.
