In my experience, people who are shaky about their own beliefs mistakenly believe they can shore up their own opinions by attacking others. The immaturity of belief (or non-belief) cannot be mistaken.

Evil is the absence of good. Typically people don't do evil for evil's sake, they do evil for the sake of their own good, then they rationalize that they didn't do evil. I think the answer is more temporate. I harken to the Second Great Awakening and the emergence of new denominations through that revivaL

A proliferation of sects doesn't mean that they all diverge from the Scriptures, but perhaps rather just speaks of their particular refinements and emphases. Baptists, for example, place more emphasis on baptism by submersion than other sects do.
