Because you are more likely to find the oil fields than when drilling straight down. Think about it.Additionally 40,000 ft horizontally would do what for who?.... Why would that number even mean anything if it's a horizontal drill?

But apparently I knew less than I thought I did. I am amazed that they can actually make a right angle turn at the end of all that linkage.
