They steal them. Anybody consider that a decent machine shop can make a firearm in a couple of days? The US shipped 3,000 weapons to drug cartels in Mexico. What do you think is going to happen with the open borders the left wingers recommend? The firearms will be back just like the one that killed a US Border Patrol officer. If the big mouth democrats on Capital Hill called for the arrest of persons responsible for shipping illegal weapons to Mexico I would assume that their intentions were honorable. Right now it's just political theater.

If they are from domestic sources they aren't smuggled are they? Sometimes they come from the American military. Gangs active in the armed services steal them in Iraq or Afghanistan and smuggle them back in. Gangs used returning bodies of slain service members to smuggle in drugs for years. Sometimes arms are purchased in foreign countries like Germany or Russia and smuggled in through Mexico or the Carribean. On the east coast, Hatian gangs are the go to guys for weapons. On the west coast, it's mexicans or el salvadorans.

Illegal weapons are handled like any business. If you want a weapon, usually the street drug dealer can refer you to a reliable weapons vendor. Then he gets a nice referral fee.

American gangs, like outlaw motorcycle gangs usually use straw purchasers like girlfriends. But there aren't very many of them. The largest is the Hell's Angels who are no longer what they once were. The most active and violent is Vagos. Next to foreign gangs, the American ones are a miniscule problem.

The entire point of gun control is to make sure that only criminals will have guns. ONLY criminals. As the new gun control laws in New York admirably show, the police won't have them either.

Ultimately, the undercurrent of liberal dogma is that robbery is a sort of wealth redistribution program. Rape is enjoying the right to have sex and murder is an exercise in population reduction. It's not really murder. It's actually post birth abortion. Even if it's decades after the birth.
