How Is This Different From What ISIS does -

Hmm do they destroy statues of people who previously enslaved them and thought of them as subhuman and said things like this about them?

"My own convictions as to negro slavery are strong. It has its evils and abuses...We recognize the negro as God and God's Book and God's Laws, in nature, tell us to recognize him - our inferior, fitted expressly for servitude...You cannot transform the negro into anything one-tenth as useful or as good as what slavery enables them to be."

They destroy history, same as the Democrats would like to do. They drag their racism about like an albatross.

Funny thing though, if you wanted to replace that old bridge in Selma our nig's would be livid.

Even though it is outdated, narrow, speed limit is only 15mph and if I had to guess is probably not the most sound of bridges in engineering standards just due to it's age.

I'd be happy if they just changed the name

I'm wondering what will be next on their list, you reckon they got anything new or will it be back to the same old play book with another Sherman / southern scorched earth policy ..................

Nasty bastards ..........

It is unfortunate that culture doesn't take time to think things through before taking action, they all thought freedom from the crackers was the way to go ...........

Being an African American after Emancipation

James Johnson, a 79 year old ex-slave from Columbia, South Carolina, stated in his narrative that he “[felt] and [knew] dat de years after de war was worser than befo’”. The Emancipation Proclamation and the Union’s victory in the war secured the freedom of slaves, but with a society plagued by Jim Crow Laws and segregation, ex-slaves were far from liberated. Slaves paid the price for their freedom as emancipation introduced new hardships, insecurities, and humiliation.

During the post Civil War and Reconstruction Era, a slave’s fight for freedom turned into a mere fight for survival. The majority of slaves were released from their previous plantations penniless. Wages for African Americans also fluctuated in response to the perceived worth of that person and manual labor was considered easily replaceable during the post Civil War time period. With income being an issue, few ex-slaves had the ability to own land. According to the 1880 Census, one-fifith of African Americans owned at least some of the land they farmed. However, these holdings were usually beset with debt, crippling African American owners in the long run. Johnson declared that, “Befo’ de war, ******* did have a place to lie down at night and somewhere to eat, when they got hungry in slavery time.”

This prevalent poverty among ex-slaves during the Reconstruction Era resulted in a lack of nourishment and medical care which in turn caused a high mortality rate for African Americans, especially children. Illness left former slaves with the burden of unpaid medical bills or the inability to access proper medical care. Deficiencies caused African Americans to resort to the treatment of diseases with herbal and home remedies. The 1900 Census reveals 30 per 1,000 blacks died each year as opposed to only 17 per 1,000 whites.

Death as a result of poverty was not the only thing that affected a slave’s life in the tough times of the post Civil War era. Ex-slaves were weakened by a severe sense of isolation brought on by separation from their families. Sales of slaves, the death of owners, and the presentation of slaves as gifts during the pre- Civil War era were only some of the reasons for this division. Alienation and loneliness dampened the spirit of these slaves’ new found freedom and made the fight to survive that much harder.

As whites saw African Americans as an imposition on normality as well as a threat to their dominance, they continued to make former slaves work for their freedom. Johnson stated in his narrative that “Since them times, a many a ****** has had it tough to make a livin’. I know dat is so, too, cause I has been all long dere.” Johnson’s experiences, along with so many others, shed light on the darker side of emancipation after the Civil War.

It's dangerous to sanitize history then one can minimize or totally deny slavery ever happened. It's already being done to the Holocaust as seen on youtube. What they are doing is no different than what ISIS is doing.

Wow. Comparing Americans exercising free speech to ISIS. You might want to rethink that.

Exercising free speech doesn't mean you have to destroy property... oh wait were taking about blacks who riot and call that "protesting". ISIS destroys centuries old monuments because they offend Islam, there's no difference.

The truth is they should put these unwanted monuments in museums like they have with things like the black only water fountains or white only lunch counters. That way the past is kept alive and future generations can learn from them.

Recent tragic events have lead to a movement in the South to rid itself of public, government-supported displays of Confederate iconography. Most of the fight has focused on the Rebel flag (insert Star Wars joke), but a new petition launched by the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP is taking aim at something a bit harder to take down: The relief carved into Stone Mountain.

The centerpiece of Stone Mountain Park is the mountain itself, featuring a carving of Confederate leaders Jefferson Davis, Robert E. Lee and Thomas “Stonewall” Jackson. While the NAACP wants the thing completely removed, another petitioner on MoveOn.org is seeking a compromise. Mack Williams launched the petition, noting that he believes “it’s important to recognize the history and heritage of all Georgians,” but that the image on Stone Mountain “only represents a small, regrettable time in the history of the Peach State.” Thus, he wants to add OutKast members Big Boi and André 3000 riding a Caddie next to Lee and the boys.

“By no means do we wish to erase or destroy the current carving, which, regardless of its context, is an impressive and historic work of art,” reads the petition. “We simply wish to add new carvings, of Atlanta hip-hop duo Outkast, to the mountainside. There’s plenty of room.”

While clearly a joke, it actually makes a lot of sense. As former Georgia Democrat Ed Kilgore notes, Jackson shouldn’t even be on the mountain to begin with. He was only added because Lee’s real military adjutant, lifelong Georgia native James Longstreet, ended up “supporting voting rights for ex-slaves and backed (and even played a role in) military reconstruction in the South.” Kilgore adds that, “Among other interesting traits, Jackson favored a policy of executing Union prisoners of war, based on his reading of Old Testament precedents. That’s the man up there with Davis and Lee on Stone Mountain.”

And now those southern former democrats make up the republican base. Congratulations. You can keep them.
