I'm A Teacher. Here's Why I'm Cheering My New Freedom From Unions

I know exactly how she feels,my mother was a teacher for 15 years and went ABOVE and BEYOND her normal duties and she never got paid more for it. It was literally based on seniority which is BS...
Good for you. Negotiated benefits have always been a bad thing. I long for the good old days before child labor laws, weekends, vacations and 40 hour work weeks.

Hopefully, you'll finally be able to pay for your own healthcare and buy your own school supplies.
The left always scare people it's going to go back 100 years without them. Uh no, that's not how it works, teachers without unions would then bargain for their own salaries like everyone else.
If you have something more than a min wage job, many times and employer will ask you what salary you expect.
I've talked about benefits during an interview or sometimes after they propose an offer, i'll ask before I accept.
that means I go over salary, vacation, health insurance, retirement plans and any other benefits.
I've never been in a union, I've always done it myself, and I like where I'm at as a Business Analyst.

Go see how the union less charter school teachers are doing . Many leave for unionized schools . Because they get paid crap and have to suffer the whims of management.

According to this it's not that big...but the benefits are getting worse for unions and it makes the overall amount for non union is passing the union salary.

My dad was a high school teacher, and the teacher's union helped him a great deal. I'm a republican, but the teacher's union taught me the value of a good union. His job was complete crap, but unions made it bearable. He had meetings before and after school almost every day, and pointy headed bosses that tried to completely change everything every two years. But at least with a union he had a prep period to get things done between meetings and all the other bs. Without the union, you can be sure there would be no prep periods, and as a whole teaching would be even more unbearable. His greatest advice to me was to never, never, never be a teacher. The crapola teachers have to deal with is epic. They are not even allowed to do their jobs. Pay isn't the whole story. The Shirts would abuse the teachers every way they could with no union.

If you think you need a union against free market abuse, you REALLY need a union against a government agency. They are the undisputed masters of the Golden Screw.

Why didn’t she get the union to change that in the contract?

But hey, go see how awesome things aren’t union schools . Good luck having everything being decided by politics and connections .
Guess nothing changes as everything is decided by Politics and connections.

Everything is decided by politics and connections since the unions and the democrats coordinate to control the schools....

It wasn't the benefits that were the issue, it was the money laundering for the democrat party that was the issue...taking money and giving it to the democrats....that was the issue.

Quit falling down the well...
Unions don’t have people’s best interests in mind… Only a handful of people at the top benefit from unions

Total BS .

I know a lot of people who are teachers . They are the ones who care about the kids while admin cares about funding and keeping psycho parents out of their office .
I know lots of teachers as well, and no the unions don't give a fuck, now the teachers do. To teach you do have to have some passion, because it's a rough job, so I do think most teachers care, but some union rep does not. It's just a con game they run.

When I was a kid we had good teachers and bad. They all stayed no matter how much the students loved or hated them. Students don't respond well to teachers that are assholes, so keeping bad teachers around has an impact on students.

The best way for people to appreciate their freedom from having to join a union is to free them from any of those onerous "benefits" of collective bargaining.
I've worked in Union shops and believe me they ain't that great if you're not a person who wants to do the bare minimum of work required.

Back in the day I used to deliver and pickup at union and non-union companies. If I went to a company I've never been to before, I could tell you within ten minutes if they were union or not based on their attitude towards me, their performance, and their concern about their company and job.

Yeah, the school union will change that just for you....dumbass.

I call bullflop on “seniority only” claim.

And if there’s a place you need a union. It’s in schools . School administrators are super political.

And forcing people to pay union dues that go to the Democrat party are not political?

There are good unions and bad, and I don't know the teachers union standards all that well. But I have always thought it was un-American to force somebody to join an organization against their will to just simply have a job. Years ago there were companies that wouldn't hire you if you didn't want to join a union. It was either join the union or refuse the job offer. I've worked at the same place for 25 years now, so I no longer have to deal with that nonsense, but for those that do, I'm glad they have choices many of us didn't have years ago.

Here are the standards:

Screw the kids, we grab the moneys.

And that's how you get schools so bad that you learn more by not going than going.

The Department of Education is a complete failure. A waste of money. It's unconstitutional. And it's a detriment to the quality of education in America.

Abolish it.

No disrespect intended toward you're mother, op.

Agreed. It should be treated like religion. Would we tolerate a "Department of Religion"?

Truth be told, statism is a religion itself. So we pretty much already have a department of religion by getting the government into education.

Republicans used to run on abolishing the federal overreach of authority that is the DOE. Dunno what happened.

I, for one, do not consent to the government emptying my pockets at gunpoint in order to fund something they clearly lack the constitutional authority (or capacity) to do.

Ask any kid in America who the vice president is and he or she will likely go dumbfounded. Guaranteed they can tell you who the center is for the Lakers, though. Making change for a dollar fifty is another story, that's a real hoot to endure when you're in a hurry.

The union will be the official bargaining unit for all teachers, and non union teachers will still receive the pay and benefits bargained for. The only thing that has changed is that unions will not be able to collect fees from non members. Of course, non members will not receive any benefits that is offered by the union itself.
