Interactive map: Where in the U.S. can you afford a home on your income?

Looks like you need at least 60k a year to get started..and 80k+ to have a chance most places.
Of note, there are still some places in this country where less than 50k a year will still put you in a house..some house..err..somewhere...LOL!

Notes: A home is affordable when monthly mortgage payments don’t exceed 30% of the household’s monthly income, assuming a 20% down payment on a 30-year mortgage.
The economy is doing GREAT!!!!!

What you're saying is most of us can't afford to live in America anymore.

THANK YOU SLEEPY-JOE

The Democrats may have not put the emphasis on taxation more on the backs of the very wealthy, and hence the working class are still getting stiffed for government's bills.
Maybe Trump will do that? He's certainly promised enough times to do it!

I think that the capitalist principle of 'supply and demand' was responsible. Do you know what that is?

Is there any other explanation for the huge rise in real estate?
The "very wealthy" are not numerous enough to pay everyone else's taxes. Much of their wealth is invested in stocks, capital, and businesses, which provide jobs. Do you understand economics?

The solution is for government to have smaller "bills", spend less, not tax more.

As I said above, it is "zoning, environmental regulations, and higher taxes" which have constricted supply to point of not matching demand.

In my county we have zoning regs that farmland should remain farmland, even if there are no farmers who can afford to farm it. Many five acre pieces of land can not be subdivided into smaller lots to build several homes on, but must be sold and remain as five acre lots, with only one single family residence allowed.

With shortage of land not regulated out of use for building, along with higher costs of materials, labor, and especially permits and inspections, small 1000 square foot "starter homes" are not a profitable build. They must be in the 2-3,000 square foot size and priced at about half to full million$.

If one does get a parcel that can be subdivided, then best affordable plan would be lots of about 1/8 acre, just room enough for that two story 2-3,00 square foot house to barely fit on. Still, such parcels are few and far between and will only provide for a fraction of the demand.

The bitch and irony is that there is plenty of land in this county that could be subdivided to provide enough single family homes if the regulations were to allow such. But "Growth Management Acts" constrain affordable housing, thinking that will drive people away. But such also drives away new businesses since there isn't affordable housing for their workers to live in. It's a self made Catch 22 for failure, which doesn't have to be.

If the slider is set at about $260,000 annual income, then this is the map display.
Not many people/couples make that much.
But you are a Leftist and your sort do lie and distort on regular basis to misinform, so not surprised you show unrealistic example.

The questions was "where can you afford a home".

I answered it.

The "very wealthy" are not numerous enough to pay everyone else's taxes.
Actually, they are wealthy beyond all reasonable proportions in America, and that's causing the working class to suffer so greatly. Elections aren't stolen for no reason.

This is a very subjective comment and opinion from you.
Heck, it's even "beyond all reasonable proportions in America". or outside USA for that matter.

Please explain how someone's wealth causes "the working class to suffer so greatly"

Last I knew, people with wealth invest most of it into items that produce jobs and income for those who take those jobs. Best use of wealth is to make more wealth.

I met an old friend on my wife's several years ago. He and her former husband use to work together in Idaho, in construction. He and his wife were friends of theirs. About the time my wife split from her husband, this friend got some resources together to start his own business, making items used in construction. When I met him, his business was very successful, employing over 100 workers. With the profits his family could live a VERY luxurious lifestyle, but he is a devote Christian and close to half those profits go to support and orphanage and school in Africa.

Wealth is a tool that can allow for many beneficial uses.

Consider the case of Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen;
...
Paul Gardner Allen (January 21, 1953 – October 15, 2018) was an American businessman, computer programmer, researcher, investor, film producer, explorer, and philanthropist. He is best known for co-founding Microsoft Corporation with his childhood friend Bill Gates in 1975, which helped spark the microcomputer revolution of the 1970s and 1980s. Allen was ranked as the 44th-wealthiest person in the world by Forbes with an estimated net worth of $20.3 billion at the time of his death in October 2018.[2][3]

Allen quit from day-to-day work at Microsoft in early 1983 after a Hodgkin lymphoma diagnosis, remaining on its board as vice-chairman. He and his sister, Jody Allen, founded Vulcan Inc. in 1986,[4] a privately held company that managed his business and philanthropic efforts. He had a multi-billion dollar investment portfolio, including technology and media companies, scientific research, real estate holdings, private space flight ventures, and stakes in other sectors. He owned the Seattle Seahawks of the National Football League[5] and the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association,[6] and was part-owner of the Seattle Sounders FC of Major League Soccer.[7] Under the helm of Allen, the Seahawks won Super Bowl XLVIII and made it to two other Super Bowls (XL and XLIX). In 2000 he resigned from his position on Microsoft's board and assumed the post of senior strategy advisor to the company's management team.

Allen founded the Allen Institutes for Brain Science,[8] Artificial Intelligence,[9] and Cell Science,[10] as well as companies like Stratolaunch Systems[11] and Apex Learning.[12] He gave more than $2 billion to causes such as education, wildlife and environmental conservation, the arts, healthcare, and community services.[13] In 2004, he funded the first crewed private spaceplane with SpaceShipOne.[14][15] He received numerous awards and honors, and was listed among the Time 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2007 and 2008.[16]

Allen was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma in 2009. He died of septic shock related to cancer on October 15, 2018, at the age of 65.[17] Shortly after his death, in April 2019, the Allen-funded Stratolaunch first flew and became the largest aircraft in history by wingspan.[18]
...

My favorite use of his wealth was founding;
The Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum is a U.S.A. 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to the display and preservation of rare military aircraft, tanks and other military equipment. The museum reopened on the Memorial Day Weekend 2023.[1][2]

On rotation in the three working hangars are military artifacts from the United States, Britain, Germany, the Soviet Union, and Japan.

The Flying Heritage & Combat Armor Museum is housed in three working hangars at Seattle-Paine Field International Airport in Everett, WA. Mechanics are typically on-site Monday through Friday, working on maintaining the technology and operating condition. The museum provides guided tours five days a week, hosts a variety of activities, features war conflict simulators, and possesses countless historical artifacts.

So are you suggesting with; "Elections aren't stolen for no reason." that a recent election was stolen ???
By whom ?
For what reason ?

But the economy's great, say the Biden lackeys.

Sure

Why do I keep getting the impression this is "in your dreams" ???

I have no idea why you think the things that you do.

Though the fact you find that to be some astronomical amount for a two income family tells us a lot about your situation.

Not exactly.
Most of the blame lies with the regressive libtards whose zoning, environmental regulations, and higher taxes on everything have driven the prices of purchase and rents through the roof.

Fortunately the wife put a down on this place about 35 years ago before the economy and home price market went crazy. Value for tax purpose is about 5-6 times what she bought for. Sale price in this market would likely be another point or two higher, at least.
Untrue but you knew that.

I am getting ready to buy more land I see the possibilities of profit in retirement because of the expanse of the Wal Mart empire to the south thirty miles away. It was hard when I bought my first home at twenty five years of age in 1986, it was hard but not impossible.

The tongue-in-cheek was a reflection on not seeing anything in what you post as intelligent or truthful.
You present as a welfare parasite who barely qualifies for Section 8 housing.

Untrue but you knew that.
Maybe where you live.

In my State* and county it is the so-called "progressive"~pseudo-liberal~Leftist~socialist/communists whom have enabled growth management acts, constrictive zoning, out-lawd use of natural gas, and scores of other envir-wacko nonsense.

All of which drive home prices, and rents, up by constricting available land to use and adding un-necessary extra-costs to building and selling.

* More people wanting to live here and driving up demand than appears to be happening in state of Mizzery where you claim to be.
