El Niño needs Westerlies in the SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.. This is residual heat transfer due to normal ocean cooling circulations. The Up side is Cali and the west might get some good snow and rain for a few weeks out of the Pineapple Express that is forming.

The chance of El Niño is 58% during the Northern Hemisphere winter and decreases into spring/summer 2015.

It's possible that the Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) is changing from the cold pattern it's been in to the warm pattern. PDO is sort of like El Nino, but it affects the north Pacific more than the tropics, and instead of lasting 1 or 2 years, it lasts 10 or 20 years.

This has been the warmest fall in Utah in a very long time.

We need more rain than we got in November, although we did exceptionally well during the summer and early fall.

SO much for any chance of El Nino... the heat is gone and water temps have dropped up the west coast. The Low that had been driving the water has moved and now the cold will drop into the upper US. Our little pause in winter is over as massive cold is about to pummel the US in the west coast and the mid west...
