Something strange has happened since the end of the Cold War at the very least. Many former right-winger rugged individualists have shifted leftwards in terms of cultural and moral nihilism since they're sick and tired of fellow right-wingers who believe in universal idealistic principles justifying the dignity behind humanity.
Likewise, many former left-wingers have shifted rightwards in opposing hedonist consumerism because they believe in a sustainable society which people can relate with.
The dichotomy is obsolete, but it just hasn't been publicly recognized yet. We are on the cusp of a new political system.

They are two sides of the same coin. They simply take turns at the trough (Washington, DC) then retire to a *cough* "job" provided for by their backers (the banksters; who just so happen to be owners of the Fed, on wall st) see- Geithner & a plethora of others before him.
