Judges disqualifying potential jurors better have a damned good reason. If not, he opens the appeal process from either the prosecutor of defense before the trial even begins.

If they don’t have a good reason, they often get the benefit of the doubt. That’s what the appellate courts mean when the speak of deference to the discretion of a lower court judge.

But overall, you do have a point. A discretionary ruling can be deemed an abuse of discretion.

Actually it's standard in high profile cases. It's to prevent the jury from being exposed to information they were not to consider. Most juries are not sequestered, and the defense could release inadmissible evidence into the media, in hopes it would infect the jury.
