Naturally.

The union is big donors to Democrats. The union also refuses to allow computerization, modernization.

Yeah, they're thuggish.

Vice President Kamala Harris sided Wednesday with dockworkers who launched a massive strike this week that threatens to cripple the economy.

...

The dockworkers union has donated more than $1.6 million to Democrats under union president Harold Daggett, who threatened to “cripple” the economy if dockworkers did not get the contract they wanted.

...

Daggett made $728,000 last year as union president, plus another $173,000 as president emeritus of the New Jersey local, POLITICO reported.

The strike snarls supply chains and is likely to cause delays or even shortages of products like coffee, bananas, cars, clothing, and Christmas decorations. The union rejected a last-minute deal from port ownership which offered the union a nearly 50% wage raise. The union had demanded higher wages and zero port automation.

President Joe Biden could pause the strike for 80 days under the Taft-Hartley Act, but he has indicated he has no intention of doing so. Some have speculated that the president is unwilling to go out of his way to help Harris after Democrats ousted him from the presidential ticket, while others have wondered if the administration is simply courting the union vote.

...

What the workers want will hurt the United States... they want no robotics or AI to take their jobs... but almost every other developed nation with shipping yards use both... some have been using robotics and driverless transport inside the shipyard for years...

This shows everyone that Kamala doesn't think before she acts... this endorsement will come back to bite her...

If the white house is going to take the side of the workers it will only extend the strike and still the workers won't get what they want... she should keep her big trap shut....

Tons of food... water and medical supplies sitting off shore in ships and Kamala is taking the side of the workers as people are dying of thirst in the south....
Biden can force the workers back to work today... and that is what he should do before this turns into the worst disaster in American history...

That's absurd. As robotics and AI improve they will replace low skill human labor. And no surprise that Kamala sides with the unions, she has no clue about the massive impacts to the supply chain, inflation and the consumer. She'll just punish the stores and outlets for PRICE GOUGING. The idea that she is even close to becoming the President should scare the wits out of any American.

I know... at first I was all behind the workers until I read their demands... if they get what they want our shipyards will remain in the stone age....
Even Singapore uses robotic cranes....

What pisses me off is the fact that what the victims of the hurricane need is sitting in ships off shore...
Fuck these workers.... they need to go back to work and strike at another time.... after we help our people out....

They are also not satisfied with a $58/hr rate (going up annually and reaching that amount in five years), which is close to $120.000 a year for a regular workweek. With overtime, they can easily reach $150,000 - great money for a job that requires no college education and can be done by largely by machines.

Instead, they are demanding a regular salary of $72 an hour, or more than $140,000 a year. With overtime, closing in on $200,000.

Their demands are ridiculous. Biden ahould call a halt to this before they create an economic crisis.

WWRD? What would Reagan do? Probably the same thing he did with the PATCO strike.

i wasnt allowed to strike because it may hurt the economy but these guys can?......
It’s up to the president to call a stop to it, like Reagan did in the 1981 airline strike. Biden and Harris are afraid to do that because they want the Union vote, and don’t care how this will devastate the supply chain.

They work the Cruise Lines also. Take the luggage and wheel it to the ship. And they get tipped with their salaries and benefits. I heard in Miami that there are complaints from some passengers who gave their luggage without tipping not seeing their luggage on the ship. Truth or not. They must have a limo take them home to a mansion after working a few hours.

people doing what they do should not be allowed to strike,,,

They were smart to strike this time of year, this year.
Strikes are like lawsuits. You demand way more than you expect to get, to simply set your initial bargaining amount.

As far as robotics and AI, they're not the only ones wanting assurance, that they won't be replaced.

Negotiations will begin soon, and it will take quite a few meetings until they hammer out what's best for everyone involved. This is a common movie sequel.

It sounds like they're asking for too much, but once you realize that it's over eight years, and that money won't be shit in eight years, it's really not that much.

Seriously? What foreign products do they require that cannot be acquired from US companies?

If you buy a foreign car built overseas, you deserve to wait on it. It will not spoil sitting on a ship.

Buying American made products just might catch on after a few months. Anything we need from China probably will just enter through the west coast and endure increased shipping costs by rail.
