I think the film was, among other things, a very powerful character study of PTSD -- He never seemed totally okay with what he was doing, it was always a struggle for him emotionally. At times he kept it together with psychological defense mechanisms--and I think a lot of that ended up in his book--saying the ugly thoughts that sometime wound through his head was a way of exercising demons.

I also don't think the film was pro-war or pro-military. If anything, it was a very compassionate look at an American solider enduring in an extremely stressful situation--to the point of only feeling comfortable when under that type of stress and not being able to transition back to a "normal" daily life.

On one level, he tells himself that he's going back for another tour because his team needs him, only he can protect his fellow soldiers with his highly trained skills -- and that may be true to a certain extent. But what the audience sees is that his PTSD has damaged him to a point of not being able to function in daily family and work life.

Was Kyle diagnosed with PTSD by a Doctor? Or did you make that diagnosis after examining him? I really don't know.

I have a hard time understanding how anyone could be so morally bankrupt as to suggest that there is anything equivalent between collateral damage and the deliberate premeditated evil we stand against. But if that is really an acceptable method of waging war it is obvious we have considerable catching up to do. I guess the obvious place to start would with a change in bombing tactics. Instead of spending all that money on JADAMs and Tomahawks think of all the money we could save by carpet bombing or slagging the cities with tac a-bombs. And-really-that's the only way to be sure.

If the ragheads didn't want a war to the knife they wouldn't have started one. Our attempts to limit collateral damage have just been taken as a sign of weakness and should be largely abandoned.
