Dr. Ochoa and colleagues identified 187 patients with the disease in a review of medical records from their leprosy clinic spanning 1973 to 2018. Most patients were Latino, originating from Mexico, and they experienced a median delay in diagnosis of more than three years, the team reports JAMA Dermatology, online August 7.

Much ado about nothing. The 187 cases in the study span 45 years which makes contracting leprosy in California considerable less than dying form a lightning strike. Furthermore leprosy cases have decreased by 90% over the last 20 years. The disease is now completely curable and there have been no deaths in the US attributed to leprosy in many years.
