FDR REFUSES TO SUPPORT ANTI-LYNCHING LAWS
From 1882 to 1968, nearly 200 anti-lynching bills were introduced in Congress, and three passed the House. ALL were filibustered by Senators in the Democratic Party. Several anti-lynching laws were proposed in the House and Senate by Republicans in the 1930's. FDR repeatedly refused to support the legislation. Even the appearance in the newspapers of the lynching of Rubin Stacy failed to change Roosevelt's mind on the subject. Six deputies were escorting Stacy to Dade County jail in Miami on 19th July, 1935, when he was taken by a Democratic mob and hanged by the side of the home of Marion Jones, the woman who had made the original complaint against him. The New York Times later revealed that "subsequent investigation revealed that Stacy, a homeless tenant farmer, had gone to the house to ask for food; the woman became frightened and screamed when she saw Stacy's face."
The racist logic of Roosevelt's political stance was expressed most clearly in 1938, when Republican congressmen attempted to pass federal anti-lynching legislation AGAIN to halt the most horrific type of anti-black terrorism. (Several thousand blacks were lynched by Democratics and the KKK in the United States between the 1880s and 1960s.) Southern Democratic Senators angrily filibustered, and FDR defied black leaders and his own wife by refusing to throw his support behind the measure. "I did not choose the tools with which I must work," he explained. "Had I been permitted to choose them I would have selected quite different ones. But I've got to get legislation passed by Congress to save America. The Democratic Southerners... occupy strategic places on most of the Senate and House committees. If I come out for the antilynching bill now, they will block every bill I ask Congress to pass to keep America from collapsing. I just can't take that risk." His decision was all about vanity, politics, and power.
