Sam's Club apologizes for cashier's swastika bracelet

Officials for a national chain store have issued an apology after a customer in its Secaucus store complained about a cashier's swastika bracelet, a local cable news channel reported.

The shopper, who told News12 he is the son of a Holocaust survivor, said he does not want to see the clerk fired, according to the report, but he hoped the incident would help people be more cognizant of other's feelings.

The employee told the customer, Paul Fried, that her bracelet's swastikas were not representative of the Nazi Germany swastika, the report said.

Now, lets practice what we learned from the Confederate Flag debate. Ahem..."It's not a symbol of hate, its originally a Buddhist symbol of peace and you dont know the history"...."Its was HOW long ago? get over it!" ...."Not all the Nazi's were bad people.."

Now lets watch as the number to Nazi...I mean, Buddhist flags get bought up to fight the PC police....

The swastika was used LONG before the Nazis ever did. There is a Navy base in California whose barracks are swastikas. That's all true.

The symbol was hijacked by evil. Just like the battle flag. Just like the rainbow.

I'd ask Costco....WAS it a Nazis symbol? Or Buddhist symbol? Either way....private company. They'll handle it in house.

The swastika has a very different meaning to orher cultures that had it long before the Nazis.

You are stupid aren't you? Was the person a Buddhist? I wouldn't expect a moronic fool such as you to understand that almost ALL symbols were used by MANY people and religions and ideologies....

It's sad to see a Buddhist (or is it Hindu) symbol taken over like that...but the Con-federates stole the St. Andrews flag saltire and gangs here in CA have stolen the Greek Theater masks for Comedy and Tragedy to the point that HS Drama clubs can't make t-shirts or sweatshirts with it because schools don't allow gang symbols.

That's true. Many symbols have been ruined by evil people and perverts.

Jews need to quit whining...always being the victims capitalizing on past events we have nothing to do with... the ancient swastika symbol falls under the freedom of religion clause. Why are they trying to suppress freedom of religion and freedom of speech?

The swastika has had cultural significance for thousands of years prior to its adoption by German’s Nazi party. Also known as the gammadion cross, cross cramponnée, or manj, it is considered sacred in Hinduism, Buddhism and Janism.

Author Steven Heller in his book The Swastika: Symbol Beyond Redemption says it was used by American companies and organizations, including Coca-Cola and the Boy Scouts.

No I'm not. I'm curious. Was she a white trash skin head with a Nazi symbol? Or was it a Buddhist symbol....which is what the swastika was long before the Nazis.

That kinda sucks to have to wait for someone to tell you what you see before you see it. The thing is it doesnt matter..the symbol, like the confederate flag offends people. Yelling about why someone shouldnt be is probably the least effective way to get your point across.

Ah! So... not all Klansmen are bad people, nor are terrorists. They are merely misunderstood like that bracelet and flag. I like the way you incorporated those two--stirring up feelings of the one to support your claim of the other--to not support the Nazi/Buddha symbol is to not support the confederate flag, which is not far off. Hitler was a huge fan of southern white supremacy. He believed they were on the same wave length as him. If the US had not gotten in the fight (WWII), he would have put his aim on the US and the rallied the southern whites to ally with him. That... is history.... btw, the Confederate flag is not a symbol of treason because seceding from the union was not made illegal until after the war started, however, I do question the mentality of people who like to flaunt failure. And did you know that the reason Lincoln emancipated the slaves was to keep Britain from stepping in to "help" the south win the war, thus taking back the colonies starting with the south and pushing to take back the north? Britain had already abolished slavery--for them to help fight a war with people who refused to free slaves would have made their own people turn on them. The slavery card was well played by Lincoln---a brilliant strategist. We could have fallen into a second revolutionary war, thus making the fallen southern fathers and grandfathers lives in vain--fought for naught. History rocks, does it not? Yeah... I think so...

So if something offends someone else....it shouldn't be worn?? What if the rainbow flag offends me?

You say it must suck to see something...but have to wait to be told by someone else what it is you see? Ok. Aren't you the one who said race can't be seen by skin color? So if I see a brown person....I can't be racist against them BECAUSE how do I know I'm seeing a racial minority?

It's no surprise really, American's are ignorant and biased :/ The Nazi party started using the symbol in the 1920's but it wasn't widely associated with Nazi's until the 30's There was, however, a very, very similar flag design with the swastika (different colors as I recall) used in 1907 that "symbolized" an Aryan meaning (Order of the New Templars in Austria), the swastika was also used in Germany as a symbol of a socialist movement not too long before the Nazi's adopted it (though it wasn't a "white power" thing.)

Before that it had a very long history through many ancient cultures:

Hindu

From the bronze-age; Indus Valley Civilization (around India - I'd heard they are either playing dice or religious "symbol" perhaps similar to cross necklaces or some such)

Symbol from Jainism; a south Asian religion (If I recall correctly - didn't feel like re-reading the entire history, sorry - this was a sun god symbolism)

And Byzantine church floor tile (in Israel)

There are tons more examples in ancient history, from India to Asia, to England, and even in the America's.

More "modern" [presumed] non-nazi uses:

Wedding gown from 1910, British Colonies (Very unlikely to be Nazi related)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/44/Swastikas_on_the_wedding_dress,_British_colony,_1910.jpg

Finnish Air Force insignia (1918-1945 - some over lap so there could be Nazi influence in the later years, or perhaps they just kept using it not realizing that the symbol was going to be transformed to an evil meaning/intent? IE, if some terrorists stole the US flag for a mass genocide, would us American's stop using it or would we continue using it?)
https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/54/Finland_roundel_WW2_border.svg

Related: many pilots wore the same symbol as a good luck charm (I believe the symbol was adopted by pilots first and then was later adopted by the Finnish Air Force. It's my understanding that ancient cultures viewed the swastika, though it was a much more flourished rendition (with like feathers on the outer arms; more flourished than the greek coin above) as a good luck charm and thus where the pilots picked it up from (they likely simplified the design to "modernize" it, or perhaps simply to make it easier for tailors to cheaply reproduce)
Matilde_Moisant_%28detail%29.jpg

The "good luck charm" idea makes a lot of sense with the prevalence of the swastika's use in the construction and decoration of ancient houses - from floors, to wall decorations, to paintings, even windows were cut into the swastika shape.
