The first year we lived on a farmhouse with a manmade lake out back, one day I saw two coral snakes, and it scared the pie out of me. When I came back with a shovel, they were nowhere to be seen, and for the last 12 years, I have not seen another. You're probably right about the chance of being bitten by one, but they are also obviously very shy if they see a human being since they disappeared so quickly. The tool shed is 40 feet from the small lake.
