Taking the oath on the bible is supposed to be somewhat symbolic. Not sure of the excact connection, but there is one.

I don't know what options are allowed for oath-taking ceremonies. If someone took an oath of office on a copy of Mein Kampf, however, I'd guess they would be run out of office pretty quickly.
