PARIS — France is ordering manufacturers to inform consumers how long they can expect their TV, cell phone or other appliance to last — before they buy it. France wants companies to make appliances that last longer - The Washington Post

Other requirements too but just this I dont think will make much difference as there probably isnt much variance in price groups as to longevity and in certain instances the obsolesce is govt induced by enviro regs.

We already have something similar in the UK called the Sale of Goods Act 1960, which states that products and services must be fit for purpose and of merchantable quality. The courts decided that most white goods should last a minimum of 6 years free from manufacturing faults and problems. The courts also decided that cost was not an issue unless the cost reflected the poor quality of the goods in the first place. So a cooker costing £25 would not be expected to be as good as one costing £250, nor last as long.
