A quarter of Americans surveyed could not correctly answer that the Earth revolves around the sun and not the other way around, according to a report out Friday from the National Science Foundation.

The survey of 2,200 people in the United States was conducted by the NSF in 2012 and released on Friday at an annual meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science meeting in Chicago.

To the question "Does the Earth go around the Sun, or does the Sun go around the Earth," 26 percent of those surveyed answered incorrectly

I do not believe this survey

Note how much it is in the interests of The American association for the advancement of science to suggest that Americans need more science education?

I haven't seen the survey but I simply cannot believe this is on the up and up.

Ask yourself if you know even one person this ignorant.

My guess is you do not.

My guess is no one you know knows anyone this ignorant either.

One out of four Americans?

This is bullshit!

If you know anyone under 30, you know someone this ignorant. Especially those in school. I remember having a conversation with a high school honors student. We were discussing WWII. I asked her if she knew who Adolph Hitler was. She said he was a racist that hated black people and put them in concentration camps.

Well of course you do.

I have to agree with this statement. What also doesn't make you look very smart is throwing an insult as a rubuttal to someone's point instead of a nice piece of factual information that proves that statement to be incorrect.
Sorry it went over your head then. "The GOP is ebil" deserves no response besides ridicule.

Maybe you think so but wouldn't a stat about..let's say more CEO's of tech companies give to the GOP than to the Democrats have been a far better comeback than just some insult?

Because from where I stand having no political affiliation at all I do think that it is more likely that people in America on the right (although that in no way means the Republican party) are more likely to come out with opinions from an anti-science perspective (climate change, evolution etc.) than those Americans on the left. Although in fairness I would suspect that they hold these opinions because their politics suggest they should rather than any kind of independant thought on the matters.

More on the right would oppose the politicalization of science, sure. But that isn't the GOP and it doesn't mean that the "GOP" opposes science. Nor am I convinced that more tech companies give to the GOP, that's not necessarily true. Google, Apple and Microsoft seem fairly left wing from what I've heard of their politics. I also remember the CEO of Costco praising Obama on stage, they aren't high tech but there is the common misperception that big business automatically supports the right.

As long as the big screen TV's and the Internet is blazing along and Facebook and Twitter
can handle the traffic Americans for the most part could give two shits about what the government is doing.

There should be people in the streets marching on the WH about what ObamaCare did alone and how Obama screwed so many people over.

And I am part of the problem.
Just bitching about how fucked up we are as a country right now is not going to change anything.
Not one bit.

Whist Obama and friends have made a real mess of an attempt for a kind of universal healthcare I find the thought of people marching on The Whitehouse after their president tried to provide healthcare for all so absurd to be laughable.

All across the first world you can find countries that have had socialised health care for years and it has worked in tandem with a private healthcare service if you wish to utilize it. I genuinely do not undersand why it is fine for them and works yet there is such a ridgid detest for something that is designed to help the poorest and most vulnerable members of society.

LOL. It is the right that has politisized science. Idiocy like trying to prosecute Mann for publishing the Hockey Stick Graph. And then that GOP stalwart ran for governor in Virginia. And look at the spew of nonsense about Dr. James Hansen, pretty acknowledged as the worlds leading atmospheric physicist. Yet the right wing writes lies about him 24/7.

You want respect concerning science affecting policy, you first get the science right. The right wing of the GOP has spewed the most idiotic crap concerning science I have ever seen in politics. And, at present, it is that wing that is calling the tune for the GOP on this issue.

Because people like Rick Scott, governor of Florida, would not be able to become very rich taking advantage of other people illnesses if we had a real health care system.

Rick Scott "was forced to resign as the head of a company that pled guilty to massive amounts of systematic fraud, including 14 felonies, leading to a historic $1.7 billion fine."
