The Department of Housing and Urban Development on Wednesday announced an initiative to extend affordable broadband access to families living in HUD-assisted housing.

The project, launching in 27 cities and one tribal nation, is called ConnectHome. (President Obama planned to discuss ConnectHome later Wednesday at the Choctaw Indian reservation in Oklahoma.)

Internet Service Providers, non-profits and the private sector will arrange broadband access as well as technical training, digital literacy programs, and devices for residents in public housing units.

Comcast runs fiber to a local hub then separates it through the copper phone lines to the different homes. Depending how many are connected to the hum determines speed.

Virizon runs fiber optics directly to the home I am thinking from a hub but am not sure.

DSL runs a dedicated phone line back to the phone companies office. That is why there is a limited number of DSL lines that can be run.

T-1 is mostly for businesses that need many phone lines.

Twisted pair delivered video is fun to watch! A great challenge figuring out what's on the screen when the picture fragments (pixellates) upon a fast scene change. Compression ratio is incredibly high and it takes time to change a whole scene.

With internet only, DSL is reasonably decent provided the twisted pairs actually used are in at least fair condition. Lots of that twisted pair cabling is old enough to have voted for Calvin Coolidge (were wires allowed to vote then as they seem to be these days).
