(CNN)Despite efforts to fight the opioid epidemic, deaths from drug overdoses reached an all-time high in 2014, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Deaths from overdoses of prescription drugs and heroin continue to be the leading cause of unintentional death for Americans, rising 14% from 2013 to 2014.

Last year, 47,055 people died from drug overdoses -- 1.5 times greater than the number killed in car crashes. Opioids are involved in 61% of all drug overdose deaths.

The latest CDC data finds that deaths from natural opiates such as morphine, codeine and semisynthetic prescription pain killers like oxycodone and hydrocodone jumped 10% from 2013 to 2014. Deaths from heroin overdoses rose 26%.

I'm tired of a society that always finds money for more prisons but can't find money for education or healthcare

What would you suggest they do with these people? Drug addicts commit crimes to support their drug habits in most instances because their addiction makes it very difficult for them to function normally within society. They can certainly be unpredictable and dangerous.

How about we change a failed law instead. Decriminalize drugs and 80% of the property crimes disappear.

I don't see how that works. They are no longer breaking the law, but the addiction still exists. Addicts are still going to commit crimes to get money to get drugs.

It was the largest single-day grant of clemency of Obama's presidency. He has now commuted the prison sentences of 184 people, more than any president since Lyndon Johnson (226) and surpassing the combined number of those granted by presidents Carter, Reagan, George H.W. Bush, Clinton, and George W. Bush (117).
Most of the commutations to shorter sentences dealt with drug offenses. The two pardons involved counterfeiting and bank fraud.

I can understand not wanting to clog up our justice system and jails with those convicted of non-violent offenses, but a lot of people also have been busted on drug charges while in the process of committing other more violent crimes.

Then, for all of you who are so afraid of guns but are all for "legalizing" drugs.

This idea helps with people who are only charged with drugs. If they haven't committed another crime along with their drug possession or whatever strictly drug-related crime, then I would be okay with that, I suppose. A lot of drug users are charged with crimes in addition to their drug possession crimes though. That's the only point I was trying to make.

I don't see how that works. They are no longer breaking the law, but the addiction still exists. Addicts are still going to commit crimes to get money to get drugs.

Hell I would GIVE them the drugs. It's far, far cheaper to do that. And safer for them. I would even put them in a hotel so that they don't have to go anywhere. The cost to society would plummet. Additionally, now that addiction would no longer be a crime if they ever decide to clean up they can and there is no stigma attached.

Addicts don't commit crimes only to get drugs. Addicts want everything other people have. They want ipads, xboxes, the latest Mike Jordan shoes. All these things cost money. Addicts can't hold down a job so they commit crimes.

Warehousing Addicts in places where they can take all the drugs they want, free, and not harm others is a good solution.
