Well this has been an interesting thread starting out with Sarah misattributing the OP link to the NY Post and, as wrong as that was, she was closer to the truth than most of the stuff I've been reading up to this point.

So we look back to the Clinton years and find some really expensive trips, but none to compare to the Obama's African trip. The only figure I can find for the cost of President Bush's much maligned China trip was about $12 million. He was there at the invitation of the Chinese government on official business, and all honest accounts I can find for his attending the opening ceremony of the Olympics state that it would have been a huge insult to the Chinese government had he passed on that. He did take a couple of hours to meet with and - at their request - be photographed with some of the American athletes. I can't find it in my heart to see that as a terrible thing.

Obama's trip to Israel cost roughly $11 million. Wouldn't you think the security concerns would have been as higher or higher there as they are for sub-Saharan Africa?

But wow. It is now four plus years and counting and the Obama apologists are still blaming Boooooooooosh for every single wrong decision Obama makes. It is just mind boggling.

I don't have a problem with our President, no matter who he is, visting other countries on the official business of the US when it is important that the President do that. Like at the G2 summit or something like that. But just as President Wilson did in the sick economy of his administration, there is a common sense factor involved. A wise President doesn't allow the people to be disappointed because of mythical spending cuts and then borrow up to $100 million to treat the family to a lavish African vacation when tens of millions of Americans are out of work and hurting. Wilson opted to stay home until the economy improved. Obama should too.

As for that cancelled Safari, I can't find anything that suggests it was to save costs. I did find this
