Obama's GM Success Story

Remember when Obama saved GM?

Instead of letting go through an orderly bankruptcy and reorganizing its finances and operations, Obama stepped in to screw the Senior Secured Creditors (pension funds and investors who thought they had a senior claim on GM) and handed equity in the Company to the laziest, most incompetent group on the planet: The UAW.

Now that Government Motors has recalled more cars than they've sold, does this still count as an Obama Success?

GM's recall nightmare - May. 21, 2014

I remember when Bush approved the bailout because the loss of jobs from GM and Chrysler going under would have destroyed our country.

Do you?

He should have been impeached for it.

When you are ideological slaves to the 'free market' as a solution to every problem, as are most conservatives,

of course you have to pretend that the GM bailout was a failure. It's like pretending the Earth is 6000 years old. The religion demands it.

Because big centralized government programs are known to work really well...right?
:cuckoo::cuckoo::cuckoo:

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. Kind of like private enterprise.

Really? Can you name ONE government program that has been a success?

And by success, I mean it has actually WORKED.

So, if we are talking about welfare programs, to be successful the program must have reduced poverty.....uh oh...that means ALL welfare programs have failed.

Another example of success would be a service provided by government that does NOT lose money, but is profitable...you won't find one.

Another would be a program that actually REDUCED its costs over time due to effectiveness, as happens in the private sector with regularity....that pretty much EXCLUDES ALL government programs.

The wars on drugs and terror have failed miserably...at huge cost monetarily and with civil liberties.

Government is legalized fraud...when will you lefties comprehend this?

What a delusionary post.

The government is the greatest force for good in America.

Look at all the good they do...all our roads, all our public schools and universities, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, the military, the police, firefighters, EPA, NASA, CDC, NIH, FDA, FBI, etc...

It was greedy corporations that destroyed the world economy in 2008 with a derivatives based Ponzi scheme.....not the government.

Not tripe.

I drive on government roads all day long. Our children are educated in government schools. Our government military protects us as do the police, firefighters, and the CDC, the NIH, the FBI, the FDA, and the EPA.

Rich corporations want to brainwash right wingers into hating the government, so they can pollute and steal from the public at will. And it is working.

Then you know NOTHING of TRUE LIBERTY, limited Government...are YOU afraid of making your own decisions Chrissy? Are YOU that much of a pussy?

This clearly shows how our "investment" in education isn't paying off.....not even close.

Sorry, I forgot to mention that Social Security lived millions of older Americans out of poverty, and Medicare is keeping my father alive.

Government does a tremendous amount of good in America.

Then why is Lizzy Warren pushing to expand it. Must not be doing enough in her view.

I am sure your father would like to move to Canada with you.

Anyone who thinks our huge uncontrolled government is good, is obviously delusional.

What you and your kind will never comprehend is big government and big business are one an the same. They help each other while enriching and empowering themselves, to the detriment of the rest of us.

America is a quasi fascist state. To blame corporations, while commending government, proves your inability to think for yourself...but it does prove you have been duped by the regime.

And those government programs you cite are terrible failures. America's roads are atrocious, public education a terrible failure, and social security, medicare, medicaid are bankrupting the nation. The military is also bankrupting the nation, while intervening into the internal affairs of sovereign nations causing very costly wars. EPA is destroying the private sector with ridiculous regulations that benefit only the largest corporations, politicians and bureaucrats. The CDC lies to protect big hospital...FDA lies to protect big pharma...and on and on...............

Americans work for their government....not the other way around.

So ...................................................................................... Bush agrees to a temporary bailout and hands the reigns over to Obama. Obama finishes what Bush set out to accomplish - saving our country. All bailouts are approved by congress.

Just like TARP - the auto bailouts were enormously unpopular at the time, even though most economist agreed that something needed to be done in order to save the economy from certain catastrophic collapse.

In the end, though, jobs were saved, the economy was helped, and the government gets repaid ahead of schedule. GM and Chrysler are earning healthy profits again, allowing the government to divest itself of its GM stock. So: everybody wins.

Meanwhile, TARP (signed under B-B-Boosh) is equally successful, but no one seems anywhere near as bent out of shape about the banks, as they are about GM.

In an effort to discredit Obama as a socialist nincompoop, GM and American cars in general have become widely panned, marginalized and ridiculed as "commie car failures."

In particular, the Chevy Volt seems to be the target of more abject hatred than all other cars ever made, combined.

Republicans ... once the champions of tax-breaks ... now bemoan the loss of the almighty tax revenue from the NONE-REFUNDABLE TAX CREDIT of all electric cars in general - especially that evil, Marxist Volt!!!

Am I missing anything here???

Oh, that's right - the FLOTUS has a big butt....

If we listened to cons and didn't have any safety standards for cars this would never have happened.

If we listened to liberals, America's economy would look like Detroit.

So, red states don't have issues too, eh ... none at all? Guess calling yourself a conservative fixes all life's problems?

This argument might might work if you could demonstrate it across the entire country instead of cherry-picking Detroit.

More cars get recalled every year now - why? Stricter laws, steeper fines, and image control are prompting carmakers to act early and often.

Why Are There So Many Car Recalls? - Popular Mechanics

Trending Up
In the past 20 years the number of voluntarily recalled vehicles has steadily grown. This is largely due to stricter laws, heavier fines, and more cautious carmakers. So-called uninfluenced recalls are instigated by the automakers themselves, while influenced recalls occur once the NHTSA has opened an official investigation.

rise-of-the-precall-02-0413-de.jpg

Ford had the highest number of recalls—24—of any automaker in 2012, but representative Kelli Felker says the decision to issue a recall rather than to take a lower-profile service action, which goes only to dealers, isn't determined by the relative cost. "It's always down to the safety," she says. "If it can affect safety, we're doing a recall."

In the end it seems that it's just safer for carmakers to err on the side of caution than to deal with any penalties—financial, reputational, or legal. Without admitting fault, Toyota has paid over $66 million in fines since 2010, after the NHTSA charged that it took too long to address problems with floor mats, accelerator pedals, and power-window switches. When we asked the NHTSA to comment for this story, it had this to say: "Manufacturers have an obligation to report defects in a timely manner and when they don't, as government regulators, it's our job to hold them accountable."

Since Congress last year doubled the maximum fine the NHTSA can impose on carmakers—from $17.4 million (as Toyota paid in 2012) to a maximum of $35 million per incident—carmakers will have an even greater incentive to issue more recalls more often. The upshot, however, is hazy.

Toyota tops U.S. recall list for second straight year

For the second consecutive year, Toyota Motor Corp. won the recall crown, according to federal safety regulators.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said Toyota recalled nearly 5.3 million vehicles last year. The Japanese automaker topped Chrysler Group, which came in second by calling back almost 4.7 million vehicles.

Honda Motor Co. posted the third-most recalls, totaling 2.8 million autos.

Let's pick on GM, though - the "commie car" people!!!

So, Bush has not been President these past 6 years. From the invasion of Poland to the Fall of Berlin, WWII took the same 6 years. At some point you have to come to terms with the fact that Obama pretty much sucks

When was Toyota bailed out by the Federal Government in a fake bankruptcy proceeding which shafted legitimate bondholders and allowed the company to keep the tax benefits of Net Operating Losses which should have been voided under bankruptcy law?

GM and Chrysler should have gone into bankrupcy, oh wait, they did. After our tax dollars were used to fix their fucked up retirement plans.

No way should tax dollars should be used to bail out any company.
