No, I don't trivialise suffering, violence or oppression that exists in some Islamic countries, because I am far more aware of it than you are. The cities that you think of as being impossible shitholes are places that I often work in, after all. A couple of them really are vile. Most are not.

What I do do is to balance that against the lives of most Islamic people in most Islamic countries, which is peaceful, moderate and no more based on hatred than the lives of people in any other part of the world.

It is just that because those good but boring stories don't make news, gullible people tend to assume the entire Islamic world looks and feels like Baghdad.

Of the 30 or so Islamic countries, perhaps 5 are real medieval hellholes. The other 25 countries vary between the slightly down-trodden and the absolutely wealthy and gorgeous.

Looks are deceiving, Saigon. I know it's improved lately but in Kuala Lumpur, I've seen squatter cities and scores of beggars outside the compounds of the ultra-rich. Much like the scene in parts of Mexico City. And Amsterdam with its hordes of American and British druggies.
