A 14 yo in 1970s rural Alabama wouldn't have a telephone.
Think about it. There were no cell phones. Kids didn't have their own phones in the seventies. A poor family isn't going to paying for a separate line for a teenage girl.

If you are waiting to go into a custody hearing, some strange guy comes around you and your daughter, you're going to leave her with alone with a total stranger to go see a judge? How is the judge going to react when he asks you where your child is and you tell him "I left him with some strange guy I just met."?
