It requires about a gallon of gasoline to produce a gallon of ethanol, which is not as energy efficient as gasoline, a hydrocarbon with virtually no oxygen. Ethanol is CH3 - CH2-OH. Oxygen is the heaviest element (16) in this compound and contributes almost nothing by way of heat energy when burning.
