The big problem that I see is that so many of the clerics are extremists themselves, and the other clerics who speak out against what is happening are murdered.

VATICAN CITY — Pope Francis challenged Muslim religious leaders Tuesday to "unanimously" condemn the violent persecution of Christians in the Middle East, as well as killing in the name of God.

They won't denounce violence, at least not Islamic violence.

An ounce of denounce cannot renounce the flounce.

That Muslims hath wrought.

Now watch Muslims burn down half of Europe just to prove that Islam is not violent.

Good for Francis.

The fellow seems closer to Man-of-God status than many who have held that office over the years.

And he seems to have more courage than most folk in the Church hierarchy, in tackling difficult issues.

Now, whether such things ever matter-a-damn, in the grander scheme of things, is another matter.

But it's always helpful for religious clerics to be outspoken in matters of peace.

And to have the courage to call upon other communities to work harder towards that peace, when adherents of another community become so obviously problematic.

That doesn't mean that his own community doesn't need to look at itself, as well.

It just means that somebody on top of the Church-ly food chain has actually said the words, in connection with Islam.

It was long past time, for such words to be uttered, on that level.
