Pres. Biden wants $15/hr min wage; Thanks but NOW its not enough

Why? Because I think thats a minimal fair compensation for labor.
Why must others be forced to your opinion on such things?
If someone is okay doing a simple task for $8/hr, why shouldn't they be allowed to?
If someone refuses to work for less than $20/hr, they are free to choose only jobs that pay that.

Because people at the very bottom of the income scale have little leverage and I belive there is a bare minimum labor compensation where a line must be drawn.

It's the same reason we have usury or slavery prohibition laws. It's just not right, even if someone is willing to enter such agreement.
You twat the minimum wage laws are racist

Oh, fuck off.

They're not racist at all.

Please consider how many whote people have minimum wage jobs before you go spouting off ignorant bullshit like that...

Been reading that President Biden will make min wage $15/hour. Thanks Mr. President but that was enough in 2010. Not 2020. It needs to be $20/minimum. 40 hours/week after taxes thats like $2300 a month.

A 1 bedroom apt in my city is like $1200/month
Student loan payment $300
Power/cable/phone/water.....another $400
Car $200
(Already $2100 gone)

I could go on but as you can see it rapidly is gone and we havent even gotten to healthcare, food, clothing, recreation

Mr President.....$20 an hour is the minimum
sounds like you live outside your means,,,

I would submit that you should have gotten a business degree. Liberal arts jobs are notorously low-paying
I got a construction degree from the school of hard knocks,,,

total cost was zero,,,
I worked construction during my summers off to help pay my way through college. I did so because those jobs paid more than minimum wage. I also bartended nights for the same reason. Why anyone would stay at a minimum wage job has always mystified me! Get some job skills! Get a better job! It's what the American dream is all about!

If the minimum wage has no negative impact... then why not make the minimum wage $200,000 a year?

If there is no negative impact, then let's all get CEO wages.

Of course that's ridiculous, and impossible. But at low end, for some stupid reason, people just think it magically has no impact.

...who are you erecting these false choices for and why are you addressing them to me?

I've never argued that minimum wage is downside free at any rate.

Here is a 2019 CBO study on effects of raising minimum wage, look it over and let me know what it is you don't think I understand:

You need to learn how to employ the "quote" function. I didn't say any of that...

Hard knocks is notoriously low-paying as well. But where I live a good construction worker can make $25 to $30 an hour easily
in fact they paid me for my education that is making me close to $100 an hr,,
$100 per hour? So why are you whining wanting a $20 minimum wage? Something doesn't square up.

Minimum wage jobs are for those who have minimal skills. That's how it works. I haven't had a minimum wage job since the '70's. Why? Because I was a kid living at home, no bills, but still liked money. A $16 year old kid living at home doesn't need a lot of money. But that minimum wage job taught me how to handle money and budget for things I wanted.

During my "best years", I was making between $175K and $200K a year. That may sound like a lot (and I suppose it is), but I was living in San Diego, had a San Diego mortgage, a family, and all of the associated costs which came from having those things. We were fine, but we weren't living as high on the hog as you might think.

Believing that someone should be able to about to support a family on a minimum wage job is simply stupid. Those who demand a higher minimum wage are those who are to lazy to work for higher wages. They want it given to them, much like they were given what they wanted and needed when they were children. Well, you're no longer children. No one's going to give you a fucking thing. Stop being lazy and go earn the money you want...

You're out of your mind. When my generation were kids we worked the same jobs you want a career of.

$1200 rent for 1 bedroom is too much for Burger King, free country, move. You want socialism, you want the lowest common denominator, that's what socialism is.

I don't think a federal $15/hr minimum wage is necessary or even that a federal minimum wage in general is necessary. What I do think the federal government should do is make it a right to unionize (not a law to enforce union membership but a right to unionize) and then reform our unions and protections around the creation of unions so that more trades, more service/hospitality, and more professional roles, and therefor more people, are part of the collective bargaining agreements with companies so that the influence is greater and the impacts of negotiations are in favor of workers in my opinion.

The more people in the unions and the greater representation of jobs that are part of those unions then the better chance of a higher starting wage if significant impacts from strikes were to be implemented. $15/hr or even $20/hr is not the same livability everywhere in the country, but stronger and broader unions with half or 2/3rd's of the country being within a new union could force companies to adjust the starting wages to a true livable wage wherever they are in the country and eventually make it so that it's not an exact $15/hr wage but the average across the country adjusted +- based on the area of the country.

There is nothing stopping people from unionizing now. No law against it. But when people unionize, the company moves out of state or even out of the country to get away from them. When I was driving during the union days, one of our customers made crates; crates the size of suitcases to the size of tractor trailers. I delivered those crates to unionized companies who were moving out because of the union.

Union companies can't compete with non-union companies. Unions are too expensive and greedy to boot.

My father is a retired bricklayer. The union sends their retirees updates on the trade. A few years ago they were asking their retirees to find younger people who might be interested in that line of work. The union couldn't find anybody to do the job; at least not anybody that could pass a drug test.

It's hard work. I grew up helping my father on side jobs. I even tried my hand at bricklaying myself. But my father made a damn good living at it plus his retirement benefits are invaluable. He retired at the age of 62 and he's still getting his retirement checks today at the age of 89. If he passes away before my mother, she will get his checks until she dies.

You can't get younger people to do hard work today. Including benefits, bricklayers here make close to $60.00 an hour. People just can't give up the dope to take advantage of such opportunities.

Here's what really happens.

Employee is worth $7.25 an hour. Minimum wage is made $15 an hour.

Income: $0 when they get shit canned.

I made $10 an hour doing odd jobs tax free in the 1980s while I went to college. I worked hard, did good work and was reliable. If someone can't more than $7.25 an hour right now, they suck. Increasing the minimum wage will just get them fired

The problem with the reality of unions is they are set up to leverage government guns to force the company to do things against its own interest.

If we had free market unions that worked with management rather than fighting them, then they could do a lot more positive for both sides

The money that an employee is paid is not based on the information you provide above, nor should it be. An employee should be paid according to the value of that employee's work. No employee at McDonald's ( I worked there for 8 years) is worth even $15.00/ hour.

Why is someone with a college degree working for minimum wage? College degrees are intended to prepare you for a meaningful, lucrative career. I guess there isn't much of a market for people with degrees in women's or minority studies or advanced basket weaving.

Nope, they aren't.

So what McDonald's will do is what they do in Europe. There are just a few people working in the whole place. Ordering and payment are done by kiosks, they have highly automated cooking equipment. Just a few people are there to give people their food, ensure things are running and deal with any issues.

You can't hire someone in Europe, you adopt them. So companies hire as few of them as possible

It's pathetic how many people get useless degrees and pile up big debts then have no job skills when they graduate

Get a better job lazy.

Oh sure bc its just that easy right?

How about we just make all the jobs better by paying an actual living wage
There is no such thing as a living wage. If wages go up prices go up by at least as much. Prices are largely determined by the costs to produce an item or service. That's basic economics.

You should be able to garner better than min wage if you have a college degree and it should be by state not nationwide. As $15 carries more in SD than NY for example.
