Refrigerator upgrade on Air Force One will cost $24 million

This is just what happens when you use the manufacturer for your parts and install vs a third party folks. Do a little search on how much it'd be to replace say a transmission both at the official dealer and at even a specialist transmission place.

I'm suspecting that there's quite simply no one else that can build nor install these fridges so Boeing gets to charge whatever they damn well want and there's nothing anyone can do about it. Though one of the reports I read said that Boeing wasn't gouging the gov, that's what it costs to everyone.

Instead of refrigerators....all they have to do is stock AF 1 with Spam
It will last a millennium

Because the President doesn't travel alone, and yea in the case of an emergency it needs to have enough food for everyone they can get on board there for some number of days... I think it's 2 weeks because that's when they figure the worst of the emergency would be over or something. The rest of the time they have to feed staff, media, even foreign dignitaries get on there occasionally.

That occurrence has never happened in the last 50 years and is unlikely to occur in the next 50

Why not just stock MREs just in case?
No refrigeration required

Repeat: The rest of the time they also have to feed staff, media, and even foreign dignitaries.

You want to feed these folks MREs? lol

3,000 meals for a plane that holds a maximum of 96 passengers and crew members:

Air Force One can comfortably carry 70 passengers and 26 crew members
18 Mind Blowing Facts about Airforce One, The Flying White House.

That's 31 meals per passenger even with a full plane. Emergency where the plane disappears for ten days? C'mon now.

One refrigerator will provide all the goodies passengers would need on a trip

In the event of a global Zombie Apocalypse, MREs would do

Even if that plane went down in a deep ravine somewhere and there were survivors, with the sophisticated radar and locating devices it would be found in a matter of minutes - maximally a few hours in worse case scenario.

And think about those 3,000 meals. They probably go through an average of 150 a day. That means the meals have to be rotated an 90% or more of them are ultimately tossed. Don't care who the POTUS is - What a complete waste.

I think you folks are missing the details here.

1. These are specialty fridges designed to handle the air pressure of constant flights, landings, and take-offs. A small 10x7 commercial fridge can run $100,000 before installation costs and that's for a run of the mill fridge unit, not something that has to fit into the body of plane while still allowing large sized access to said contents, hell they might each have an elevator thing in them just to get the food onto the passenger levels.

2. They have to have special ventilation to deal with high altitude, low oxygen situations.

3. There are five being replaced - which means they're like $5m each.

4. I bet they each have to have security systems on them to prevent poisoning.

I can tell you that if your mini fridge in your RV goes out you're looking at $4-5 grand to replace it. My husband has to explain this to customers all the time at work and they make the exact same kinds of complaints. Thing is, it's gotta run on DC, it's gotta do this and that and blah blah blah... There's only so many companies that make them so they're expensive. ~shrug~

I agree with one or two refrigerators to comfortably feed 100 people for an extended trip and back

But 3000 meals just in case there is a Zombie Apocalypse is planning to the extreme
