He (legally his wife, a quibble) owned 200+ slaves through the war. He held them despite the fact the will that granted them to him said he was supposed to manumit them long before the war. People justified him because of the huge expense of manumitting them. However, in contrast to Grant who had one slave given him and the greater expense of manumitting him in Missouri than in VA managed to do it in a yearIt's racist to celebrate anyone who fought for slavery.
If you knew anything about history you would know Lee was against slavery.
You do know more have died in Afghanistan under Obama, right? So we SHOULD pile up all the dead Afghanistan vets in front of Obama's house.Love what happened to his house....we should do stuff like that today.
Which one? Chicago or Hawaii?
Crawford Texas would be a more appropriate place....
Do you want to celebrate Osama Bin Laden's birthday too? Lee=Bin Laden
Lee put Virginia first, the Union second, and the Confederacy third, however, as is often the case,
events overwhelmed his principles.
most people today do not understand that the world was a much different place back then

The man was Committed to the Constitution, no doubt. Slavery was a part of that Constitution. Shame that it was.
And Yes! - He saved the Union!
That he did, by gosh.
Be thankful. You might not live in the most prosperous, powerful country in the world had he not.
What union did he save? 11 states wanted to leave and he decided to kill them instead of letting them leave. The union would have gone on with or without those 11 states, so again, what union did he save?
There's a reason that those states seceded and it had everything to do with the economic oppression being exerted by Northern states by means of their population advantage. They passed hefty tariffs that devastated the agricultural economy of the South and were heedless of any protest to the damage they were doing. Fort Sumter is where these levies were collected and the reason it was fired upon when all peaceful measures were exhausted.
For several decades prior to the Civil War, the North was forced to delay or compromise several of its national economic policy objectives due to Southern opposition and the strong position the Southern states held in the Senate. As soon as the Southern states seceded Congress began enacting this delayed agenda. The Morrill Tariff of 1861 raised rates to 20 percent on average, ending more than 30 years of declining tariffs.
Wrong, he fought for his state, the CSA, and his property. The USA could not "invade" Virginia, for Virginia was a governmental entity indivisble from the USA.

The "freedom" argument is nonsense.
It's not just that these people brutally subjugated and enslaved millions of people, their ancestors continued to deny freedoms to others for another 100 years through Segregation.
Oh God, not that crap again.Of course not....it was fought over a states right to allow slaveryThe Civil War was not fought over slavery. We know Lee fought against the Union, thus fought for slavery.
stmike talking about history is similar to a hamster eating the pages of a history book.
All one has to do is read the justifications for secession written by South Carolina, Mississippi, Georgia, and Texas. These were the direct words of the people who started the civil war, and the reasons they gave for doing that. Only a revisionist moron accepts contemporary spin about it.
Avalon Project - Confederate States of America - Declaration of the Immediate Causes Which Induce and Justify the Secession of South Carolina from the Federal Union
I have read those justifications as well as the Constitution of the Confederacy.......protecting slavery was prominent
On April 12, 1861, General P.G.T. Beauregard, in command of the Confederate forces around Charleston Harbor, opened fire on the Union garrison holding Fort Sumter. At 2:30pm on April 13 Major Robert Anderson, garrison commander, surrendered the fort and was evacuated the next day.Oh God, not that crap again.Of course not....it was fought over a states right to allow slaveryThe Civil War was not fought over slavery. We know Lee fought against the Union, thus fought for slavery.

Lincoln started the Civil War, dumbshit. He invaded Virginia. It wasn't the other way around.
Ooops, hit agree by accident....you're a moron.Against it in a "I'm going to keep my slaves until I am forced to free them" kind of way. It's racist to celebrate anyone who fought for slavery.
If you knew anything about history you would know Lee was against slavery.
Yes, he expressed a few sentiments against slavery, but still fought *for* the cause of defending, preserving, protecting and expanding slavery. There's no getting around that.
You're a moron who doesn't know history. Almost nobody on the confederate side was fighting for slavery because very few even owned slaves or had a stake in slavery.
The war was fought because 11 states seceded over issues that had nothing to do with slavery and Herr Lincoln Über Alles used illegal force to dragoon them back into the union.
Do you even know why Fort Sumter was fired upon? Of course you don't because you're an ignoramus who has no clue what the issues were leading up to the war.
Read the southern justifications for secession...their own words by the way
Southern plantation owners suckered poor white trash into fighting for slavery.
What union did he save? 11 states wanted to leave and he decided to kill them instead of letting them leave. The union would have gone on with or without those 11 states, so again, what union did he save?

Tariffs had been declining prior to the Civil War, due primarily to Southern opposition. They went up when the South seceded.
