With ban on semi-automatic weapons out, Congress now spars over universal background checks | Fox News

Leading gun-control advocate Mark Kelly warned Republican senators that trying to block a vote on new firearms legislation that includes universal background checks could hurt their re-election efforts.

Kelly, a former astronaut and Navy captain, directed his remarks to Sens. Rand Paul and Marco Rubio, among five Republican senators who have suggested they will filibuster a debate and full floor vote.

“They should listen to their constituents” and not get in the way of the debate, Kelly told “Fox News Sunday.”

If the GOP filibusters and/or continues to block even debate on proposed legislation, they will feel the voter's wrath in 2014 and again in 2016. With 80% of voters supporting enhanced background checks, the GOP could lose the House in 2014, if they continue to deal for the NRA. I guess they enjoy those fat checks from the NRA more than anyone realized.

The are listing to "their constituents".

Actually OP's article is right.
This might be one of those times to set your values aside and win votes. Right now the majority supports universal background checks. It might be time to swallow the pill and support it, at least until the next election cycle.

(1) Laws frequently have names that are contrary to their actual import.

(2) A good public servant exercises his own best judgment, not what a majority of his constituents think they want. After all, most of the constituents are either stupid or uninformed. They pay him to find out the straight skinny and vote wisely.

(3) Many poll results are driven primarily by how the question is articulated. NOBODY disputes the idea that it's a good idea to prevent crazies and criminals from owning guns. The operative questions are (a) does this legislation do that? and (b) does it do other things that are worse - like preventing many law-abiding people from getting weapons that they are constitutionally permitted to own?

(4) Speculation that a particular vote on a particular piece of legislation may "cost the politician his seat in the next election" is usually silly. As it is here.

Glad you think so.

Wonder how many voters in America own guns??

This debate has nothing to do with owning guns. The Dems have stripped the assualt weapons item and the magazine restirctions out of the legislation. This has everything to do with allowing debate on a very sensitive issue. If the GOP continues to carry the old tires "they are trying to take away our guns" line, they will lose.

Yes, if the GOP blocks debate, they will pay. The Dems will use their position like a hammer in 2014. They will be painted as uncompromising and heartless....which of course most of them are.

they stripped it away only because they don't control the house. given the opportunity they would put it back in in a heartbeat. no one wil support your rights stripping party

what other legislation is there at present ?

seems the Democrats hear Filibuster and just let the Republicans have their way -

the Ds should let the Rs have the floor till the whole country tells them to STFU - this subject or on a more balanced budget than giving in to the sequester they allowed against the very people who kept them in office.

Who the hell does Mark Kelly think he is, he's still using the same lie Maobama got 3 Pinocchios for. His credability is in no better shape than Maobamas, as noted by your dear leaders falling poll numbers.

Dems up for reelection are pretending to support Second Amendment

exactly. its alll a ruse. let them get reelected and they will be all over pushing for gun restrictions. Sandy Hoiok did one thing. It got liberal politicians to show their true colors. they thought they had the perfect opportunity to force their agenda. They spoke out and got resitance they never expected. now they are trying to back pedal.

You are delusional. The Sandy Hook parents will have women praying for more controls. The GOP will lose big if they block debate on the coming bill. Just watch...

Of course that will make it smoother for Hillary in 2016....:clap2:

No, you do not understand the issue. The issue is NOT gun ownership. The issue is more aggressive background checks. Over 80% of the voters support this issue. The GOP is miscalculating badly.

they know full well what this democracy wants.

They are not democracy driven

this is proving to the American voters who the republican party really works for.

I think he will find that it has loads to do with owning guns.

Sensitive issue my ass. Its a knee jerk reaction to some meathead who killed a bunch of innocent kids.

Knee jerk reactions are all the politicians have. Anyone who wants a gun of any type can get one no matter how many regs or laws there are out there.

The Clowns must like pissing in the wind because the only people any new laws hurt are the law abiding gun owners.
