For a century, since the heyday of Theodore Roosevelt, Americans have recognized that the enormous economic force of capitalism requires guidance and regulation if it is to further the noble mission statement contained in the Declaration of Independence.

That guidance and regulation, which falls to our democratically elected government, requires constant adjustment as our economy and our society change over time. By itself, capitalism seeks only the expansion and concentration of capital. Without regulation, capitalism destroys the very society within which it exists. We need a tuneup now and we need it rather badly.
